category confusion

i’m brand new to this and it’s probably a dumb question, but i’m going in circles trying to figure it out…
i want to organize my posts according to category (i.e., Videos, Writings, Events, etc.). i have added some categories to the sidebar. but the couple of posts i’ve put up are showing up under all sidebar categories at once, instead of the one i select for each post.
i also tried adding a Pages widget to the sidebar, thinking i might organize my posts on particular pages. but the “Pages” widget doesn’t show up on the sidebar. i don’t know why i can’t figure this out.
again, probably an easy question. i’m just learning.
thanks!!

i have added some categories to the sidebar
I’m not sure how you’ve done this. Did you use the Categories widget? http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/
Also you may want to read up to understand the difference between Pages and Posts.

hi jennifer. thanks for replying.
yes, i used the categories widget. the categories do appear on my sidebar as expected, but the two posts i’ve made BOTH appear under ALL categories–even though i double checked that i created the posts with specifically different categories. what did i do wrong?
ah, thank you. i do want one of these posts to be a page. however, i did try to add a page widget to my sidebar and it didn’t show up there when i went back to look for it. how can i make the pages easily visible and navigable?
you can see this mess at aliavolz.wordpress.com
thanks again.

oh ok, now i see the page on my sidebar. so i guess that’s okay.
still wondering why all my posts show up under all categories on the sidebar.
thanks. -
Hi, could it be that you added the category widget twice, once putting “writings” as the title and then “videos”? That might account for your categories showing up twice.
If you want to structure your categories by having something like parent and sub-categories, you can do that in the dashboard, under the posts section. If you want to see how the result can look on the blog, I do it like that.

Hi, it’s me again. I had another idea: You could also use two text widgets titled “writings” and “videos” and then manually insert links to those categories you want to be listed under either heading. if that makes sense.

taletellerin, thank you! lovely blog, by the way. looks like a fantastic collection…i’m trying to follow your first suggestion, but still having trouble.
i deleted everything and started from scratch.
i created categories and subcategories using the posts section of the dashboard and i put up two posts in different subcategories. the subcategories also had different parent categories. fine. but these don’t show up on the sidebar. i have the impression that to make the categories appear on the sidebar, i need to create a widget category.
but as soon as i create two widget categries, the same thing happens as before. all of my posts show up under BOTH categories. i don’t understand why. does this make sense to you???
shouldn’t i be able to specify under which widget category i want my post categories to appear?
thanks a million.

To make the categories appear on the sidebar, you need to add the Categories widget. As you’ve already found out, this widget displays all the categories assigned to published posts, so there’s no point adding the widget twice. The title of the widget is just a title, not a “super” category.

gasp!! i think i just figured it out… i’m not very good at this stuff.
i guess i have to use one categories widget, with all posts organized in subcategories underneath the widget. i thought i could organize posts within multiple widget categories.
i have seen the light (i think).
thank you.

Oh, I’m so sorry! Epic fail on my part. Of course, you need the one category widget. I see you have figured it out by yourself anyway.
In completely superficial news – I am so jealous of your hair. :)
