Category Conversion for Blog That's Not Mine?

    Hello everyone.

I imported a Blogger blog xml file to my WP site (which is currently still private while I get everything in order). If you’ve done this before, you know that you end up with dozens, maybe even hundreds, of categories because Blogger labels import as Categories rather than Tags.

Using the category/tag conversion tool usually fixes this without a problem. However, this time something weird is happening and I can’t explain it or fix it.

I got through the process using the tool, selecting all the Categories to be converted to Tags. Currently, there’s 184 of them, and I only want to keep about 10-12 as Categories, the rest should be tags. When I click the button at the bottom of the list, I get the usual message telling me I’ll get an email when it’s done.

The email arrived, but when I returned to my admin panel nothing had changed. Figuring it was a glitch, I did it all over again. Same thing happened. Got the email, went to the site, nothing different.

Then I actually read the email. Both say the same thing:

    [blockquote]
Your conversion of categories to tags for the blog http://clitools.wordpress.com has finished, but some categories also existed as tags. The converter has added all posts from the converted categories to the tags. If you want to remove the categories, please confirm that all posts were added successfully, then delete the category from the category management page at https://twistednonsense.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category.

    Thanks,

    The WordPress.com Team

Clitools is not mine and I am not an admin for that site. I don’t know what’s happening here. I need to get my own Categories/Tags stuff right, and I want to make sure I’m not screwing up someone else’s blog — and also that they won’t be able to screw up mine.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Oops, sorry guys, I manually typed in the blockquote thing and it didn’t take. Apologies for that.

  • Hi there,

I think that site being referenced in the email might be a glitch.

The link you have to click to delete the categories is for your own site, so it’s safe to click. That link will also not automatically delete them, but it takes you to the page from where you’ll be able to delete or bulk-delete them.
