Category Converting to Tag Upon Menu Addition

    Hello,

    I have encountered a strange new bug/error in the WordPress menu additions tool this afternoon. I am trying to add my “New for 2021” Category into my “Categories” menu. Every time I look it up in my list to add it, it shows up as a Category. However, when I actually add it in to the menu, it converts into a tag? I am beyond confused why this is happening.

    I tried to attach screenshots but I couldn’t find a way to do so. For clarity, I have a Tag labeled “New for 2021” as well, but I removed one of my posts from this tag to see if distinguishing them by one post would make a difference. It did not.

    Hi,

    I am trying to add my “New for 2021” Category into my “Categories” menu.

    Here’s your “New for 2021” category archive page. There are five posts with that category assigned to them, and there’s a menu item under Categories linked to it.

    Every time I look it up in my list to add it, it shows up as a Category. However, when I actually add it in to the menu, it converts into a tag?

    Four of the five posts with a “New for 2021” category assigned also have a “New for 2021” tag assigned, and the “New for 2021” tag archive page, linked to in the menu, includes those four posts.

    I’m not sure what you mean by a category being converted to a tag, but I suspect that having a category and a tag with the same name might be causing the problem. I don’t think it’s a bug.

    I’d suggest doing the following:
    1. Delete the tag “New for 2021,” as described in the Adding and Managing Tags section of the Tags support page. Also delete any other tags that are identical to categories.
    2. If it’s still present after step 1 above, delete the menu item “New for 2021” from under the top-level item Tags.

    Good evening,
    Thanks for your reply. Yes, this was the issue as I feared. After I posted this, I thought about the tag’s identical name possibly being the culprit but didn’t look into it. Your post was just reaffirmation of my suspicion.
    Sure enough, upon deletion of the tag, New for 2021 shows as a category and not a tag. Everything looks as it should, now!
