category count errors

Hi.
I posted several test entries in my new blog and tagged them. When I deleted the posts, the categories stayed in the sidebar…but now link to 404 error pages because the entry related to that category had been deleted. How do I make sure the sidebar category widget only counts current entries?
(I’m using the basic template.)

from your dashboard, go to Manage > Categories, and delete the categories with no posts.

Maybe I didn’t explain this clearly? Sorry.
For example, in another reltaed error, my sidebar category widget lists “Uncategorized (3)” but there are only two existing posts [I’d deleted an earlier test post] that are in the “Uncategorized” category.
I don’t want to delete the entire category, especially since there are other posts in the category. I just want the counts to be accurate.
