Category Deletion Problem

I searched the forum, but I didn’t find anything addressing this. I’m working on a new blog, and this morning, I made a category called “Topic” and made it the parent of 26 new categories (to make things simpler, let’s call them babies). Then I decided I didn’t want the “Topic” category anymore, so I deleted it. The babies also disappeared. HOWEVER, the WordPress admin page says I still have 26 categories, and if I try to add a category by the same name as one of the babies, WordPress tells me “the category you are trying to create already exists”. When I click on “Manage Categories,” nothing comes up. If I enter one of the babies’ names into the “Search Categories” box, nothing comes up. If I write or edit a post, though, those baby categories appear in the “Categories” box on the post page. All I want to do is get them deleted, so that I can start over. Any ideas?

Does re-adding the “Topic” get you there?

It did! I should’ve thought of that. :) Thanks so much for the fast and helpful reply!
