Category help?

  • Unknown's avatar

My blog is susanmcelroy.wordpress.com. I’m a noob with a category creation problem: I’ve added two categories in my sidebar widgets under my Appearance option. They show up in captital letters on my blog sidebar. When I post new stuff, it does NOT list those catagories as categories I have created. If I try and recreate those same categories on my posting page, then they show up under my sidebar widgets in small letters under the one’s in capital letters. And the posts get listed in both categories, no matter which catagory I chose to put them in. ??????

I worship at your lotus feet…

You don’t have to add anaything to the categories widget:

    Categories Widget

Categories won’t show up until they have at least one post assigned to them.

    Yes, more guidance please…

Boy I hate being this dumb, but I don’t know what you mean by “you don’t have to add anything.” Add where? How do I get the catagories I’ve created in my widget to show up as options for me to catalog my posts on my new posts page?

    I remain stupified and shamefilled…

@susanchernakmcelroy: The Categories widget lists ALL the categories that have posts assigned to them: you only add it once. The capitals are supposed to be the title of the widget (e.g. “Categories”), not your actual categories.

By the way, your sidebar has jumped to the bottom. See here:

Check the note on formatting issues and correct your latest posts.

Assigning a post to a category is done in the post editor. The editor screen includes a Categories module.

Okay, pana…dam: then I have to ask, what is the point of a catagory widget if it is not really a place for people to click to find that catagory? I’m just getting myself deeper into the quicksand, huh??

There is an odd pointless thing about the category widgets. Yes, you can put 2 of them into your sidebar and name them with different titles, but they are both exactly alike, except for the titles. So you don’t need both of them.

Your categories are: “Living a Nature-Inspirited Life” and “Maple Musings.” Get rid of one category widget and give it a title like: “Topics on this blog,” or just “Categories”

Then when you click “Living…” or “Maple…” you’ll get a page with all those posts. (Though right now you only have 1 post per topic so your categories page will only show 1 post for each topic)

I meant, give the remaining widget a title.

With the category widget, you can write more articles about “Living…” or “Maple…” and readers will see a list of all those posts.

Dare I ask if you have been posting from Word? I wonder because Misty Look is supposed to have the sidebar on the side, not the bottom.

Yes, 1Tess, I have a boo-boo going on that has to do, I guess, with the <more!> function. I’m wondering how to correct this? I’ve tried moving <more> in html, and got nowhere, and I’m still scratching my head….

@susanchernakmcelroy, your inquiry is off topic from this thread, but at the least we need a link to your blog so that we can take a look.

    I’ll post a new thread…

OK, we will watch for it.
