If you have a wordpress.COM blog please post the URL for the blog starting with http://
You can do that after you read the sticky post at the head of the forum. Here’s the link to the sticky post https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

You just need to go to Appearance>Widgets and add the Categories widget for your sidebar.

No it’s not working: you’ve created a plain static page, not a link to your categories.
If you want your post categories as a dropdown in the header, you’ll have to turn them into subcategories to a News category, then go to Appearance > Theme Options and select the option “Use categories for header menu”. In that case you’ll need the Pages widget for the sidebar.
