Category pages – possible to have no sidebars?

  Hi

  I want to place one large article on its own page is such a way it is a post that can be commented on etc, and be sticky.

  A category page with its own category would work well, but it seems the sidebar cannot be removed?

  Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
  (1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
  (2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update.

  Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags too will update automatically update with posts.

  By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

  We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

  Posts and Pages are not the same. Only posts can be made “sticky”. Pages cannot be made sticky. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

  When you create a Page (not a Post) in the Twenty Ten theme you can choose to select “full page template” in the page attributes module. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-attributes/

  Thanks for this much appreciated, although I know at least most of it, although the clarity helps.

  I have been playing around so possibly “BK Barn and Stables” was not a category page when you looked, it is now.

  The question is, can I remove the sidebar? I can then create one big post, it will duplicate into this page on its own with a link and allow comments – if it appears also on the main blog page then that doesn’t really matter, but at least it will not get pushed down on that page.

  Possibly I need another solution – I just put my article on a static page with a category on its own, and a post thread on the main page.

  Basically I want to:

  1/ Place a large article where it won’t move
  2/ Provide a way for others to comment on it

  You can’t remove the sidebar selectively on dynamic pages, except if you have the Custom Design upgrade. What you can do is publish the article as a static page, and select the no-sidebar template for it.

  Thanks for your reply, just got back, you have confirmed what I thought must be the case.

  Really must investigate the CSS upgrade, I wasn’t aware it could do that, I though it was just colour changes etc.

  That begs the question how to publish it as a static page and then allow people to post about it – the only way I can think of would be to create a dummy post with the same title?

  Any ideas.

  ? A static page is just like a post: visitors can comment below the content if you don’t disable commenting.
