Category Parent

I checked around and could not find this topic. But if it has already been brought up, I’m sorry.
I wanted to know if its possible to have a sort of drop down menu regarding the categories and categories parents on our side bar? For example:
On our sidebar we would have the category parent (Football, for example) and as soon as we clicked on this category, we would then be able to see the sub-categories, such as Penalties, Free-kicks, Goals, etc. But only after clicking the Parent Category. I hope everyone understood my question.Cheers!

What you’re suggesting is theme dependant. It’s up to the theme authors to create something like that. Most don’t as it requries JAVAScript to be turned on to view the menu. (On my blog, I’m running about 20% of visitors with JS turned off.)
There is also the question of Accessability as that would not allow those using text and voice browsers access.
Hope this helps,

I’d rather say it’s up to the Widget Author(s), so that is not a question for widget enabled themes, which are plenty today.
it requries JAVAScript to be turned on to view the menu.
it’s not true.
one of my favorite examles is Andrew Gregory’s “Explorer Tree”.
Explorer Tree is a bit of DHTML that implements a Windows Explorer-like tree from simple unordered list markup.
People without Javascript, or with Javascript disabled, get a regular unordered list.
With Javascript, the list becomes a tree with branches that can be collapsed or expanded to hide and reveal sub-lists (tree branches)
this one is a bit outdated but it surely works in all major browsers I know. google gives tons of links on: dhtml tree

Probably now but *cough* 6 months ago, there was still little to few themes that were widget enabled. :)
And here I was worried about answering threads from a week ago, the last time I was on line. ;)
As to the issue about javascript, most of the method of creating dropdowns I’ve come across have been javascripts. I actually do not like using downdowns at all because of the accessablitily issues involved but I believe the dhtml method would get around most of them. I really haven’t used the method in the past much. I try to stay away from website creation for the most part.

hello, Mike!
half a year ago almost all themes installed around wp.com were already widgetized (well, may be except the wonderful Fauna which is already a RC), but that doesn’t matter, anyway.
alas, DHTML also means using a Javascript. there are methods which don’t requires a JS at all — pure CSS ones. dunno if they fully cross compatible with all modern major browsers today (last time I happened to see a such one, it worked in the Gecko driven browsers family only).
anyhow, Accessibility ain’t a problem in this case, as it already stated above w/o JS it fallbacks gracefully to the regular unordered list we can see in our sidebars now.
as for this thread age mentioned, I just came across this topic during a search (as it recommended) before posting on ‘Foldable Categories Tree’ in the Ideas forum (mine, as it appeared, is already too long).
I don’t think that answering to not brand new threads is a big deal — forums are not an online chat, like IRC or something. till the issue is not resolved or idea is still interesting why don’t we discuss it, isn’t it what forums are for in fact?
at least, I didn’t happened to see any time restrictions on posting in the rules so far. however, if this really an issue which deserves a discussion, I guess it may be transfered in another new topic.
