Category vs. Tag

  When publishing a new post, there are two different sections on the left which says “Post Tags” and “Categories” which made me confused…
  What is the difference between a Category and a Tag?
  Why they both exist together?
  What is their purpose? What are they used for? What can they do?

  Please help.
