category widget – can it be customied?
-
Good morning
I’m using structure by organic themes and wouldn’t mind another category widget on the front page but with selected categories only – is this possible?

Looks like you might be able to do some of what you want with a custom menu widget.

In a word “no”. The only customization we can do is stated here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/
If you need to show your categories in a certain order, you can build a Custom Menu then adding a Custom Menu Widget instead. -
As @auxclass says, you can do it by creating custom menus with only the categories you want in them and then using the custom menu widgets. It of course is a totally manual thing – no dynamic updating.
You could also write your own in a text widget.
The problem is that they will show on all pages that display widgets. There is no way (short of some complex CSS) to limit what widgets show on what page (and even then it is theme specific).

@TSP: That’s not a problem for Pete, as he’s using Structure. “Homepage top” widget area and left sidebar don’t show on all pages.

check me if I’m wrong – I grab a custom menu from appearence / menus
title it (say xx),
populate it with say (1) category
– save it –
and then grab a menu widget,
drag it into the left sidebar,
choose the xx menu –
save itand hey presto? there it is on the front page …

Wait, if you only want it to appear on the home page, then you have to put it into the “homepage top” widget area.
