Category Widget Seems Broken

  • Unknown's avatar

So, the category cloud that shows up on the right sidebar of our site used to go to a list of links of posts containing that category.

Sometime in the past few days, something changed. Now, if you click any category in the widget, you get the first eight posts containing that tag. If you click to see MORE posts with that tag, they show up in their full format rather than links.

Basically, a user no longer has any way of clicking a category and seeing a list of associated posts without wading through ALL the full posts.

Thanks if you can fix this!

You are using a retired theme that may no longer support all WordPress.com features. I’ll tag this thread for a Themes Staff follow-up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

Thanks for the info! I hope they can fix it, because changing my template just seems… nightmarish and time-consuming! haha

    Hi there,

Our team recently brought the Infinite Scroll feature to pages like the category pages on blogs. However, that feature may not work as expected on retired themes.

I’ll let our team know about the issue, in case it’s something that case be fixed, but the best way to make sure your blog supports all WordPress.com features is to use a non-retired theme: https://wordpress.com/themes/

Oops! Sorry for the typo. I meant, “in case it’s something that can be fixed.”

I guess I’m just not a fan of the infinite scroll! I turned infinite scroll off on our homepage when it was first added as a WordPress feature. And until recently, that setting seemed to work on the category/tag pages.

If people search for things (by manually typing into the search window) on our site, lists of links still show up in a paginated format. I hope it can be fixed on tag/category pages, too.

Also – it would be nice if we could see how widgets worked in the theme preview. I would consider updating my theme, if I knew it would fix this issue. Preview lets me see the category cloud, but does not show the functionality. If I upgraded and still had infinite scroll on my category/tag pages, I’d be pretty unhappy (and probably unable to return to my retired them). Infinite scrolling is pretty useless for categories/tags, as people click on those to see lists of posts containing that tag/category.

    Thanks for your help!

Oh – hrm – re-reading your post, it sounds like infinite scroll is just a forced default on catgeory/tag pages for everyone… regardless of the theme they use?

    (I misread brought as bought)

Really not a fan – it’s not user friendly at all when people are using tags/categories to navigate content.

Thanks for that feedback. I’ve passed along your comments to our theme developers so they can take a look!

  • The glitch in category pages in Vigilance has been fixed. Apologies for the bug and thanks for your patience.

If you’ve selected Infinite Scroll in your settings then it will be present on the blog page, as well as archives and category pages, as long as your theme supports it and you are not using footer widgets.

Kathryn – I have infinite scroll turned OFF. Infinite Scroll does not appear on my home page (main page of my blog) – but it *does* appear on the category pages. And, it just started doing that recently.

I would like the ‘Infinite Scroll: OFF’ setting to apply to my entire site, not just the main page. Is that possible?

My theme does not have the option for a footer.

Sweet! I think I figured out my own fix. I went in and said YES to infinite scroll and saved the change. Then I went back and said NO to infinite scroll and saved again. On the resave of ‘no infinite scroll’ the property applied to all pages.

  • Glad you’re all set.
