Category/subcategory Hierarchy

The current issue I’m facing is that I have categories with the same subcategory names, and as you are probably aware you cannot have the same slug twice within wordpress. This has resulted in ugly, long and keyword repetitions (which I’m concerned about as I don’t know if this is classed as keyword stuffing). For example “domain.com/baby/baby-carts”

This is going to be a large site so a category hierarchy is going to be useful. At the moment I have my permalink structure set to post name only but if you could think of a logical solution that would be fantastic. Then I can swap to category/postname.

In any case what do you propose? Is it OK to have the parent category word repeated in the subcategory slug? Or not?

    domain.com/kids/kids-clothes
    domain.com/baby/baby-clothes
    domain.com/toddler/toddler-clothes

Would this be SEO friendly and user friendly or do you have any other suggestion? I would greatly appreciate some advice with this.

In an ideal world I would prefer

    domain.com/kids/clothes
    domain.com/baby/clothes
    domain.com/toddler/clothes

But it doesn’t seem like this is achievable with wordpress?

Hello jode18, as Matt Cutts talks about this exact question in this video, it really doesn’t matter.

In my opinion, the shorter the length and descriptive enough, the better your URL.

An alternative way to organize your categories and sub-categories could be:

    domain.com/clothes/kids
    domain.com/clothes/baby
    domain.com/clothes/toddler

Hope this helps and for any further questions, let us know.
