Caught between WP.com and WP.org and blocked from all my sites!
-
Dear Friends,
Welcome your help. I have 5 self-hosted sites on WordPress, for which I did the one-click install via the hosting company. It all worked perfectly and I was able to begin designing the sites using themes I installed. However, now, trying to access WP Admin for those sites, I am told that:
* the password is wrong.
* I believe it’s right but still, I follow the Lost Password process, give my email address and am told that a confirmation email will be sent to allow me to reset. No email has been received (nor in junk mail folder).
* then try account recovery, which tells me that I should be able to do the Lost Password process (the one that just failed, repeatedly).
* I try to submit the account recovery form again, and am then told that my site does not exist.
* YET I am able to access my WordPress.com account, see the stats on the site, change my password, everything except access the WP Admin to be able to edit and update my site/s.
* Even after changing my password myself, I get back into the Error – Lost Password – no reset email nightmare. It gets even more bizarre. In reading about it all, I realize that my WP account is with WP.com despite the fact that all my sites are self-hosted, and involved downloading WP software through my web-host company’s one-click install.
So, I head over to WP.org and try to log in there, but am told that neither the user nor the site is recognized by WP.org. YET when my hosting company sent me the details of my first site, it specifically listed WP.org for more info on WP software.
Is it possible my self-hosted sites were mistakenly set up in a WP.com account, rather than WP.org, and this has caused the password impasse? A dumb question no doubt, but something isn’t adding up.
I am bewildered and frustrated and have no idea how to get out of this Groundhog Day of going round and round. You don’t exist except you do, your site doesn’t exist, except here it is listed in your WP.com account (if I click on ‘My Sites’ they are all there, and I can see how many people have viewed and from which country).
Thank you so much for any guidance on fixing this. I am completely blocked from my sites until it is resolved.
Best regards,
BeatriceThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

“* YET I am able to access my WordPress.com account, see the stats on the site, change my password, everything except access the WP Admin to be able to edit and update my site/s.”
This is because WordPress.COM has a separate username/password. The idea is, you create ONE WordPress.COM account and create multiple blogs under that one account.
When you install WordPress onto a self hosted server like you did, you create a new username/password for each website.
WordPress.ORG is where you go for questions about self hosted WordPress sites.
So what does this mean?
It means that you have a WordPress.COM username/password, a WordPress.ORG username/password, and a separate username/password for each individual WordPress website you created in your hosting account.
If you head on over to the WordPress.ORG forum, they should be able to help you get your WordPress username/passwords figured out on your self hosted websites.
Clear as mud? =]

Many thanks, it does help clarify the confusion among WP.com, WP.org and individual website accounts / user names et al. However, it doesn’t explain why..
1) I was able to set up and administer 5 individual websites 2 months ago with no problem
2) when I try to reset the password on any of the now blocked sites, I get into a weird ‘Lost Password’ loop that tells me an email has been sent to allow me to reset, only I never see the mystery email and so can’t reset. Will try the WP.org forum, though when I tried logging in over there, it didn’t seem to know me from Adam.
Many thanks for support, it helps.

You may want to just create a whole new account over there.
I use the same username/password for my WP.com and WP.org accounts. It makes it easy and also confusing haha.
With WP.org you can actually login to your database and update the password if you need to. The folks over at WP.org should be able to help you accomplish that if it comes to that.

Many thanks for your help. I have indeed just set up an account at WP.org and am asking the question to the forum there. Nothing else I have tried is getting me anywhere.
All the best,
Beatrice
