Censorship

I have already asked but I have yet to receive a response? Even members of my family appear to be having a problem connecting to my Blog. Am I being blocked by WordPress for some reason? I frequently receive ‘wordpress suddenly closed the connection’ reports when I try to connect. I have been told by readers that they frequently find it impossible to connect and when they do it is impossible to navigate around my site. My followers on ‘twitter’ have reported the same problem. If there is a problem with my content please let me know as there is little point in persisting if I am now unwelcome on WordPress.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

We don’t block access to individual sites on WordPress.com. We suspend sites that violate our terms of service, but then you’d see a notice in your dashboard, and anyone trying to load your site would also see a notice instead of your site.

What you’re describing sounds like either a connection issue or a browser issue. It’s unlikely different people in different places would all experience those in the same way, but there’s really nothing else it could be.

A “{website} closed the connection” error typically means that it took too long to download a site’s files into your browser, and the connection timed out. It’s not anything nefarious done deliberately by the website’s host, but an automatic measure to reset what our servers interpret as a stuck process. This is more likely to happen on slower internet connections, so that’s the first thing to check:

How fast is your internet? Does this only happen at certain times of the day? If so, your ISP might be experiencing higher loads at those times, meaning they’re likely throttling your connection. If you use a proxy or a VPN connection that could also make your connection slower, making timeouts more likely.

See if switching to a different internet connection makes any difference in this. Also see if using a different browser helps.

Then you can also unplug your modem/router for a few seconds to reset its connection cache, clear your computer’s DNS cache, and even try switching to a custom DNS provider like Google DNS or one.one.one.one, rather than using your ISP’s DNS servers. Instructions for these last two options are specific to the exact operating system you’re using, so please search online for the correct process for your specific setup.

I have a good internet connection and I receive visits from across the world, all of which came to an abrupt end but only on WordPress. I have a 4G connection which allows me to watch live news, or films I have no problem with Emails, I am on other platforms which have shown no sign of a problem and I have received no warning from another site telling me that the connection was abruptly closed apart from WordPress, which is why I was curious.
At one point one of my followers told me that a post which was a sticky, appeared to be blocking my site, because on several occasions he had been unable to move past it, but apart from that I have no idea why his message should have coincided with an incredible reduction in the number of visits to my blog. My set-up is by 4G connection by a huawei receiver, in an area where there are relatively few inhabitants. If the network is busy it sometimes makes for a slower response, but as I have said it appears to be only WordPress which is affected. I change my connection position constantly as I move around and I constantly empty my cache. How would changing my browser help those connecting to me, surely if it was a browser problem surely it would be at their end? Most of my visits came over night from America and Hong Kong.
I have just taken a quick glance at my stats and it looks empty but with a couple spikes over a thousand, which would mean to me that there is a problem of some sort. But thank you for your response I can relax knowing that WordPress is still happy to have me aboard. Happy New Year.

  • Hi there,

I have no issue accessing all three sites on your account. Can you please let me know on which site you’re referring specifically?

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s the address I have already given you, enochered.wordpress.com

I have a thumbnail to wordpress and it takes me via stats to my dashboard so I see my visits all the time as I pass by and when these cut-offs arrive you can see straight away, the visits simply stop dead, just like that, in the middle of the day and there will not be another visit all day long, even if I post an article. Weird. This has happened loads of times.
As you well know, when you get to the garage the problem vanishes, so you will not have been surprised when you made it through to my blog. Could it be google or youtube or somebody?

  • Could you let us know next time you’re experiencing cutoffs? Also if these tweets about issues are public and still available, would you mind sending us links to a few? That would be helpful too.

Also, did you notice more issues with particular posts, or is it pretty consistent even when people are just visiting the front page of the site?

And, I did notice a few of your sidebar widgets are timing out / returning 500 errors for the images. They probably aren’t the main factor but you might remove those just to help speed up the site load time.

I can open your blog ok. But there is nothing after this warning. Given that you are a prolific poster does this mean that there are later posts that I cannot see? Or have you just stopped posting since this warning?

The warning he is talking about was about trying another search engine because I was already having problems. My WordPress Blog has been wiped out. I am not having a general problem with my web connection, everything else is OK. I have followers all over the place plus there are links on other sites to mine and I would be surprised if they all decided, as a group, to stop reading my stuff. There are always periods when you gain or lose readership, I have a long experience on WordPress and I under that but never mind.

  • Hi there,

The slowdown and the connection issues you’re experiencing are probably caused by the number of YouTube videos you have embedded in your posts.

I ran some tests and found out that a third of your site’s requests come from youtube.com.

Instead of having all those YouTube videos loading in your front page, I suggest using the More Tag to truncate your posts so that only the first part of a post is displayed on your homepage. Here’s how to to set that up:
