Cen't Save or Preview in MS Edge using new Editor

• Unknown's avatar

I have been successfully using MS Edge for several years to manage our website. I have full administrator rights.

This month I decided it was time to bite the bullet and start using the new Gutenburg Editor. Things are going reasonably well.

However, when I come to Preview or Save, I get errors. The only way out seems to be to Ctrl A (select all), Ctrl C (copy) then move across to Chrome, open the page/post for edit, delete the entire page and Ctrl V (paste). After all this, I can preview and save in Chrome

Clearly this is unacceptable as I want to use MS Edge.

I have tried clearing cache and cookies but it made no difference.

The precise errors are;
For Save;
Updating failed. Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this post.
For Preview;
I am either shown the current version of the page/post or I get an error about not being able to find the page/post

All my software is running on the latest released levels.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

• Hi there,

Can you please tell us the exact version numbers of Edge and Windows that you’re using? There are currently two flavours of Edge – the original Edge that came out with Windows 10, that Microsoft is in the process of retiring, and the new Chromium-based Edge that’s replacing it.

You should be able to see what version you’re using, along with the version number here:

https://supportdetails.com/

If it shows the browser as Chrome, rather than Edge, it means you’re on the Chromium version of Edge.

What are the exact errors you’re getting in Edge? If possible, can you take screen shots of the errors and upload them to your media library so we can see them?

I’m assuming you’re not getting the same errors in Chrome, correct?

Thanks for getting back.
I am using Windows 10 (20H2) OS Build 19042.630
I am using the new MS Edge Chromium-based browser
– the link you sent says “Chrome 86.0.4240.198”

I have uploaded the error I get when I try to SAVE

When I try to do a PREVIEW, it just shows me the current page right now so I can’t grab any screenshots

You are correct that I am not experiencing the problem when I use Chrome as my browser

• That’s Chromium Edge, yes. Though the most recent version is 87, so there might be an update on your computer that hasn’t installed yet. I don’t think that’s related, though.

This looks like a bug that our team has been investigating – we’re not sure what’s causing this yet.

On most cases, deleting WordPress.com cookies and logging back in resolves it, but you say you’ve already tried that.

Something else that has helped for some people is changing their password, so can you please try that for me?

If you’re using any browser add-ons, specifically ad blockers or anti-tracking add-ons, can you check if disabling those make any difference.

Thanks for following up and for the information that this is a known problem.

I went back into the MS Edge settings and discovered that there are two sets of cookies for wordpress.com in the list as well as cookies for our actual website address. I delete them all, closed the browser and logged back into my admin account.

After that I was able to preview and save successfully.

While this looks like success, I have experienced the situation where the problem only starts after I have been editing for a while so until I next have to make a change to our site, I won’t be completely sure this is fixed.

Thanks for now. I will leave the forum query open for a couple of weeks in case it happens again.

I have a similar situation, but with Youtube videos.

Here’s what’s going on with me:

– Microsoft Edge

– Google Chrome (the same in Firefox and Opera)

See the diference? In Edge if I past a Youtube link simply doesn’t appear*, while in Chrome works fine. In Edge, it’s only possible to include Youtube videos if I use the classic editor, but now the change process to it is kinda slow to do often.

* if I try to preview, it shows an error that there’s no post available.

I’m using the ‘Baskerville 2’ theme (WordPress free), but no matter the theme happens the same. While the Edge seems isn’t compatible with WordPress, I’m using the Chrome but if possible check it out what’s going on.

PS: my website is this

• @ertvmusic, since this is a different issue from the one in the original post, could you start a new topic here?
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/?new=1

You can add a “modlook” tag if you’d like to get staff attention.

That way the people who have been working on this topic won’t get unwanted notifications as we look into your issue. Thanks!
