Certain tag added to a forum topic is automatically altered

  • Unknown's avatar

Whenever I add the tag “category pages” to a forum topic, it is automatically changed into “category; pages.” I don’t want that semi-colon in the tag, and it serves no purpose. Can a staff member correct this.

See, also, that appending the slug combination “category-tags” to the forum tags page (https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/category-pages) leads to the “category; pages” tag results page. There are ten with the helping response(s) by me in there and I would never dream of adding a “category; pages” tag, though I might have done so accidentally once.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Correction:

Sorry, the slug combination referred to is “category-pages”.

Hi doc- Essentially, even misspelled, the tag leads to https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/category-pages. You can continue to add “category pages” and still get there.

I know the misspelling is irksome, but will leave this for Staff.

    Hi justjennifer,

You can continue to add “category pages” and still get there.

Thanks. I know that, but the tag page itself has the tag spelled incorrectly. I’m presuming there’s a way, just as there is on a website, to edit the tag universally, so that not only will the tags in 90 topics presently misspelled be corrected, but future use of the correctly spelled tag will not continue to be changed to the misspelled version as soon as the tagger updates the topic on which it is added.

  • Hi @musicdoc1

I’m not able to reproduce this. I am able to add “category page” and “category pages” to threads using a non-staff account and it displays the tag correctly without a semi-colon. The category pages tag you see displaying on this thread now was added by me using a different account.

It could be that your browser saved the tag with the semi-colon in the form history the one time you used it and is now auto-filling it without you realising it. Try clearing your browser’s form history and see if this still happens if you add a new tag.

As for changing the category as it appears at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/tags/category-pages, that is probably possible, but it’s not something our devs will see as a priority at all. The tag I added without the semi-colon still links to that page, so there is nothing functionally broken. It’s just the appearance that’s off.

    Hi @kokkieh,

I am able to add “category page” and “category pages” to threads using a non-staff account

Can you provide a link to a topic with a “category page” tag added? I’ve yet to find one, including this topic.

The category pages tag you see displaying on this thread now was added by me using a different account.

The tag that I see present in the sidebar of this thread is “category; pages” — with a semi-colon. As I said previously, when I add the tag correctly as “category pages” — without a semi-colon — it is transformed to “category; pages” as soon as I update the page (i.e. the topic). It appears that the same thing has happened to the tag you’ve added.

This has nothing to do with my browser settings. Auto-fill is disabled, and I never used. I always type or paste tags into the tags field on a support forum topic. Have never seen one auto-filled. The tag on this page appears as “category; pages” with the latest Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari browsers.

    Sorry, one more correction:

The “category page” tag doesn’t have this problem. The issue is that a “category pages” or “Category Pages” tag added to a topic is being converted automatically (after update of the topic page) to “category; pages”.

  • Hmm, the tag appears to have reverted again from the one I’d added to the one with the typo. When I’d added it it was showing without the semi-colon.

Be that as it may, this is not something that will be a priority to fix. As I’ve told @justjennifer before as well, this forum software has been hacked to pieces to have it do everything we want it to do and this is causing glitches as time passes. For now we’ll have to live with it :)

Exactly. That’s probably why it took me so long to notice it. Tagging is often the last thing I do after publishing a forum topic post. It only changes after you update the page.

Fine. I was hoping that it would be an easy fix, like universally changing a tag or a category in a website, as I suggested above, which can be done in 5 or 10 seconds.

I use category page and dynamic category pages because if I type category pages I get category; pages.

BTW there are other tags that automatically revert to something else too but I cannot recall right new what they are. As I run into them I will post them, here.

oops! Not “new” but “now” … arrgghhh!

    @ kokkieh,

I was just able to duplicate the result obtained here on a website. It the tag “category; pages” is created first, then you attempt to add the “category pages” tag to the post, the tag is converted to “category; pages,” with the semi-colon after update of the post.

The solution, on my site, is to edit the tag at the WP Admin post tags page, removing the semi-colon, which takes about 5 seconds.

    @ timethief,
Thanks. We’ve already determined, above, that the “category page” tag doesn’t get converted.

BTW there are other tags that automatically revert to something else too but I cannot recall right new what they are.

Thanks. I think this was the first one I’ve noticed, but I’ve no doubt now that there are many others.

    .
Editing the tag at the WP Admin tags page, so that it is correctly spelled there, permanently fixes the issue in 5 seconds.

That works in WP-Admin, but the forums don’t run on WordPress software. There is no option for a forum admin to edit tags or tag links. To change this in the forums would require editing the code, and that’s likely to break more than it fixes at this point.

We’re hoping for a complete forums upgrade in the not too distant future which should fix issues like this, but in the meantime we’ll need to live with it.

Or perhaps I should say, “Thanks;”.
