Changable dropdown menu icons

  been looking for this for about 5 hours
  i have an
  expandable menu with sub menus and 2 desired icons

  I need to have an arrow icon point down next to menu text

  then an icon (arrow pointing up) when the menu is collapsed

  essentialy an image swap on menu click

  i would prefer not to delve deep into core files hopefully there is an easy solution
