Welcome to CSS land! :)
Swapping the colors for Blogum so it has a black background isn’t super simple, but it’s certainly doable. What you should do is find all of the instances from the original Blogum stylesheet where it mentions “color” or “background-color” or “background” and add custom CSS to swap them.
“Color” is mentioned 60 times in the Blogum theme stylesheet. To be thorough, you’d want to add a little CSS for each one of those.
Here’s a partial example to try out:
body { background: black; } #header h1 a, #access a, .post-meta h1 a, .post-data a, .comments-link a, .post-edit a, .widget-body li a, .widget-body p a, .wp_widget_tag_cloud a, .widget_tag_cloud a, .widget h1, .widget h1 a, .post-content p, .post-content li, .post-content dd, .post-content dt, .post-content pre, .post-content address, .post-content div, .post-content kbd, .post-content tt, .post-content var, .post-content p a, .post-content li a, .post-content table a, #nav-below a, .footer a, ::selection { color: white; }If you’d like help checking on a more complete list, let me know and I’ll do some more work on it.

Thanks – I actually went through the Blogum Stylesheet – and it was not easy.
In the end I chose to use the Nishita theme and work from that.
Still struglling with some stuff though :-)
