  • Unknown's avatar

When I go to the post pages (where all my posts are) I am now getting wordpress new view.

Personally this is making life really difficult for me – but when I try to change back to classic view the option says it is already on classic view (even though it isn’t).

I cant get it to change back – I have cleared my cache and I have tried logging out and back in again.

    Please can anyone help?

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @littlewriter5,

I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you’re experiencing—these changes can definitely be frustrating, especially when it disrupts your usual workflow. Let’s see how we can help get things sorted out.

Could you please share how you’re trying to switch back to the Classic View? It’ll help to know the exact steps you’re following so we can pinpoint what might be causing the issue. Also, do you have any plugins installed? Sometimes, certain plugins can interfere with how the editor behaves, so that might be worth checking.

In the meantime, you can access the Classic Editor by switching to Classic View. Here’s a guide that walks you through the process: How to Access the Classic Editor.

    Thank you

@dikshasingh3005, With all due respect, you probably don’t realize the depth of the loathing and level of utterr hatre, that many of us have for any form of Gutenberg block editor. It is not merely “frustrating” or “disruptive”…. it is completely antithetical to the way we write and compose things. It is the nature of that particular beast.

A block editor is designed to be the primary composition tool, but many of us do our writing in an actual word processing program and then paste the finished product into the classic editor for image insertion and final fine-tuning. Some use this workflow by choice but others simply do not have 24/7 access to the internet.

If WordPress.com does ever ultimately completely eliminate the classic editor, they will lose a percentage of their users. That’s the reality. As long as WordPress.org continues to support a Classic Editor plug-in, there will be the option to switch to that format and host their blog elsewhere as long as the cost of doing so is affordable. Others will simply stop blogging.

However, the fact is that WP’s “Classic Editor” is not the only one of its kind. There are several Rich Text editors out there and in fact the C.E. is based on one of them, called TinyMCE. Others are CKEditor, Quill, draft.js, Prosemirror, Summernote, and Lexical. They aren’t identical but they are all constructed on the Rich Text base…. which the Gutenberg (aka ‘block’) editors are not.

Users here may not realize that the Classic Editor isn’t limited to either WordPress.com or WordPress.org because its ‘parent’ TinyMCE is platform-independent. So even if both WP.com and .org ever kill it, there will always be other options/forks that still offer this type of editor (sometimes exclusively, no Gutenberg at all.)

WordPress would be very foolish to either eliminate the C.E. entirely or to put it behind a $300-month ‘paywall’ by making it plugin-only. Doing so would send a signal that they are only interested in business-oriented customers or those with deep pockets. I guess we will see, as time goes on.

There seems to be some confusion as to what is Classic and what is Default.

Classic view is the original WP Admin view that all users of WordPress use.

Default is the newer view (initially called Calypso) that WordPress.com developed and introduced exclusively to WordPress.com users about 10 years ago. It can still be used on many of our site dashboard pages by clicking on the View tab in the upper right corner of your browser window if available in a dashboard.

Just recently, WordPress.com switched several of our dashboard pages to the Classic/WP Admin view. This includes Posts, Pages, Portfolios, Testimonials and Comments. Unfortunately, it’s not currently possible to change those dashboard pages back to the Default (Calypso) view at this time.

Adding to the confusion is that regardless of what Admin Interface Style you choose under Settings> General> Admin Interface Style, the above dashboard pages I mentioned currently only display in Classic View.

@littlewriter5 If there is a particular issue you are encountering while using the WP Admin view of the Posts dashboard, or a feature you’re missing because of this change, please post back here and let us know. Thanks.

Why in the world would you folks make such a drastic change in how the list of our posts looks to us and how we interface with it without asking us for any feedback beforehand or even giving us a heads up that you were going to do it? The person who gave that order needs to confess and walk the plank.
