  Am I able to change the background colour of my free website? Online help describes an option to do it under the Customise option but I can’t find it.

  @bryanhenshawyahoocomau, not all themes allow this. If you do not see the option to change Backgrounds&Colors in the Customizer, it means your theme does not support it.

  Just as a bit of information for the future, if you did ever decide to step up to a paid WordPress.com plan, you could be able to modify background color with custom CSS:
