Change blog address AND upgrade to domain name – which order?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have an existing blog and would like to a) change it address and title/name of the blog and at the same time b) upgrade the new name as a custom domain, after that is done I will to do a redirect. In what order should I do the address change and domain upgrade? Under Change Blog Address link it says that this will not let you register a custom domain for the site and sends you to the Domain Upgrade. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

You can change your site’s title, so what appears at the top of your site when viewing it, at My Site ->Settings, or at My Site ->Customize ->Site Identity. Changing this does not affect your address/URL and changing the address does not affect the site title.

If you plan on adding a custom domain name you don’t need to change the free address. A custom domain will hide the free address so no one will ever see it. Still, if you prefer to change it, it doesn’t matter whether you change the free address before or after adding a custom domain. You can find instructions for changing the free address here:

Thanks! Follow-up question: So if I add a custom domain name that reflects the new title of my site, meaning the domain name it is different from the name of my site in the free address, I will have to do a redirect, right?

  • Think of adding a domain as putting a new cover on the book. The book itself doesn’t change, but from the outside it looks completely different.

Same with domains. Nothing on your site will change. People will just see a different address in their browser when they look at your site. Both the free WordPress.com address and the custom address will take people to your site but only the one you pick as primary will be visible.
