change display name

  assuming my username and blog have the same name quirkyhill, when i answer comments in my blog, my nickname will appear as quirkyhill. if my username is quirkyhill but my blog name is X, will my nickname will appear as quirkyhill, or X? if it appears as quirkyhill, can i change it to X? how?

  It will appear as quirkyhill.

  You can change what will publicly display by changing your “nickname” under users > your profile: http://support.wordpress.com/change-your-username/

  does a change in nickname affect all the blogs under one username? or can we restrict the change to one blog?

  No, the “nickname” is per user account, so it would change it on all of the blogs that you have under a single account. The only way to have separate nicknames for each blog is to have separate accounts for each.
