Hi there,
You will first need to buy a plan under My Site ->Plans.
After you do that, you can register a domain as part of the plan by going to My Site ->Domains -> Add.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thank you so much for addressing my situation. As a neophyte, I make a lot of errors. I really don’t mind paying for the plan. Do you suggest that I take the middle of the road plan for $99 per year? Also, trying to tap into your expertise, when I scroll through the available templates for the website, I really don’t see one that appeals to me. Can I just create one on my own? And for hosting the site, do you have any suggestions?
I know I’m asking so many questions, but forgive my ignorance. This is the first time I’m doing anything like this.Aloha,

That really depends on what you want to do. If your main goal is to connect a domain to your site, the Personal Plan is enough. You only need Premium from the start if you want to do stuff like upload video or audio to your site, or if you want the ability to customize the CSS of your theme.
. Can I just create one on my own?
It’s not possible to install or create your own themes on WordPress.com. With Premium you can use the custom CSS feature to essentially rewrite any of our existing themes, but you need to have pretty advanced CSS knowledge to do that, and we’re not able to help with that kind of thing.
And for hosting the site, do you have any suggestions?
If you create a site on WordPress.com we are your host. Hosting on WordPress.com is free and set up automatically the moment you create a *.wordpress.com site.
You only need hosting if you want to set up a site using the open-source WordPress.org software instead. But that requires quite a bit more technical knowledge than running a WordPress.com site.
If you’re interested in self-hosted you can find some more information here:
I suggest, for a start, make a site on WordPress.com. You can always migrate it to self-hosted later if you find WordPress.com doesn’t meet your needs. You can also take a look at our tutorial that addresses a lot of the basics of having a site here:
