Change email associated with account

I registered an account with a secondary email that I now want to shift under my primary email (I can log in currently with each email going to different accounts w/different associated sites). I no longer have control over the secondary email but I still want to use the site I have that email associated with. When I try to change the email associated with the account in Account Settings, it gives me a ‘that email is already in use’ message.
How do I take the site registered under the old secondary email and get it associated with my primary email? Do I have to delete the account currently associated with my primary email (which doesn’t have any active sites associated with it at this point)?

Unfortunately, every WordPress.com account can only be associated with one email account. However, there is a simple solution, according to this support document (also see excerpt below). Go to your account with your primary email. Change it temporarily to a third email you have (and if you don’t have a third, just create one). Now you’re free to change your email settings in the other WordPress.com account to your primary email. However, you will not be able to have both accounts under the same email, but since you don’t have any active sites on one of your accounts, I guess this will not be a big loss.

If you attempt to change your email address and find that it never updates after saving the changes, the issue is usually simple. The email address you are attempting to use is probably associated with another WordPress.com account. Because each address can only be associated with one WordPress.com account, it will not allow you to use the same email again.
The solution is also easy. You can use a different email address that is not already in use, or you can log in to the account currently using your desired email address and change it to something else. Once changed, you can then reuse the email on a different account.
