Change featured post/normal post order? (domain mapped, free plan)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Greetings,

Just did about an hour long google search session to try and figure out how I can change my featured post and or normal post order with no results that I can use.

By set up consists of a domain purchased from network solutions and mapped by wordpress.com for a fee. I also use the free plan. And I’m also a novice. Code scares me.

What I have learned is that plugins exist to remedy my issue. I’ve seen examples of other peoples wp-admin bar having a plugins icon on it. Mine does not, which lead to me finding out that wordpress.com does not accept plugins. It uses some built in and that’s all you get.

Can anybody confirm/elaborate on my findings? And to my main question: Can I change the order of my featured posts and or normal posts based off of the set up described above?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

Can I change the order of my featured posts and or normal posts based off of the set up described above?

See the “post order” tag forum index, and the response by timethief in the change order of posts topic.

That’s correct. You can’t add plugins to a WordPress.com site. However, see Plugin Requests section of the Plugins support page.

    Okay thanks.

I’m not going to mark this as resolved even though I did what I needed to get done by essentially cheating. For future reference and maybe a work around for somebody searching for this answer. I will elaborate.

I went to my wp-admin dashboard > posts > clicked edit on the post I wanted to move. To the right, is a drop down menu named ‘Publish’. In that menu is a calendar with an ‘edit’ link underneath. Clicking this allows you to edit the date and time. You can do one of two things here.

    1. Change the date and time to say… 5 minutes ago, and hit update. This take the post move it to the top (assuming you didn’t post anything after 5 minutes ago.

    2. Change the date and time to say… 3 hours and 45 minutes in to the future, and hit update. This will remove the post from the blog, and auto post it in 3 hours and 45 minutes.

I was hoping that using a sticky would solve my problem, but unfortnately a sticky post even though it shows first and is marked as featured, will not be featured first if it is not the first ‘post’ (non-sticky).

So what I have learned here speaking for my own blog theme. Is that featured posts are ordered in the order of your most recent post, and after, that are tagged ‘featured’.

Hopefully there is more of a solution for featured/post order at wordpress.com in the future for the platform. But for now, looks like we’re going to have to cheat time.

What i’m really, really, really hoping for. Is that your sticky post also tagged featured simply becomes the first featured post link/image and remains stuck that way. And you can go happily about posting with additional stickies falling after it, and featured posts (non-sticky) falling after that, in date/time order. Or simply give us ordering control over everything.

Please feel free to correct me or enlighten us with other workarounds for this issue.

    Cheers

Admin if you need to move the post it’s all yours.

Changing the publish date and time is the only option, of those suggested in the topic I linked to above, that actually changes the order of posts on the posts page, and ordinarily it’s the action I recommend foremost to those you wish to display posts in a different order. Does it not also work on the featured content posts?

Whether sticky post settings affect featured content posts may depend upon the theme you’re using. Which theme is activated?

You may add a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic to call for staff attention.

    Correction:
change “those you wish” to “those who wish”
