Change File Name for PDF/Word doc not changing

I want to upload a file for viewers to click on and print. I know that the original file name will be the name uploaded, but I want to change the original file name, and it won’t. I have changed the file name on my computer several times, but it will not upload as that new file name. Perhaps it is my computer because when I delete the old file, trash it, and delete the trash items, it still uploads as the old file name–UGH! Any suggestions? Thanks.

What is the new file name?

price-quote5.doc is the old name and the new name is Price Quote.doc
Every time I have tried to change the name, a new number was added to the original file name such as price-quote5, so you see I tried to change it several times. It is probably something really simple to shift, but I am not seeing it.

Since I have not been able to change the file name, I have not uploaded it.

I just tried to rename the file again at the public library. I copied the content from one of my pages (2011 Summer Prices) and pasted it to a word document and named it Price Quote. When in the process of uploading, the file name came up as price-quote6.doc. So how would I change an original file name?

Do not include dashes or any punctuation in the filename when you rename it. Try that.

I am not and have not included any punctuation or dashes. The original file has the dashes.

Seems I read that WordPress.COM has some sort of delay for deleting a file to reuse a name –

How about just change the name of the file before you upload it i.e. “Price Quote Feb 2011” – then anyone knows when the last price was updated – easier for you – I use a similar method for one of my files that I have updated several times – I think I am up to Revision V-5. The text stays the same in the Post and I leave the old file in the media library to help reduce search engine crawl errors from deleted files.

If I did that, the file will upload as “Price Quote Feb 2011” or whatever I rename it instead of what I want, which is “Price Quote.” And the text in the post will read as the title states, wouldn’t it? I will try it, but I thought I already did this.

The file would upload as “Price Quote Feb 2011” but you can edit the text in your Post back to plain “Price Quote” your visitor would also download “Price Quote Feb 2011” when it got to their PC.

Without FTP access I think you are stuck with the above workaround as you can’t change the file directly on the server. (We don’t have FTP access on WordPress.COM) or until they add the change a file name in the Media Library (which would give the programmers some more problems) – I think you are a bit stuck.

Sorry best idea I can think of – and it is what I use on my site –

I did it and it worked as Price Quote 2011. I don’t understand why I can’t do it the other way. Is it because in the original file name it is: price-quote and now is price-quote-2011? I guess I had to change the name with something after “quote” so a version number wouldn’t appear. Later I will try to put 2011 in front of “price.” Thanks.

You be welcome & good luck

WordPress.com holds onto file names after they have been deleted – I got real tripped up with some pictures when I first moved my site here – I had I think 100 pictures to deal with that had new names –

You just reminded me… the audio files (in the sample audio playlist of my site festivalstrings) that I uploaded I would like to have the name of each file (which are individual songs) listed at the spot of the play arrow. I have not found any information as to how to do that. Do you know? I should probably put this in as a different topic, but I will start here.
