change font and font size wothout plugin

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi I have juste created a new blog (www.vanmonoz.wordpress.com), and as a newby I have been able top find solutions to most of my issues by googling and thinking of workarounds. It is a hobby blog so I do not want to devote lots of time to it. I just created a profile on wordpress.com, so I haven’t installed WP or an FTP client or anything, Ijust use the web browser for editing and such, which works great.
I was just wondering if there was a way to change the fonts and sizes to use my own fonts (I couple of .ttf fonts that I purchased from a charity, http://www.homeless.org) without having to install WP and download the plugin

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

My understanding is that you can’t install a .ttf file on WordPress.com site. A self hosted site might be a different thing, but this forum and the site you mention aren’t, they are WordPress.com sites.

Fonts used on a WordPress site are defined by the site’s theme. So in the first instance I would recommend choosing a theme that uses a font that you find agreeable. That’s the simplest solution.

If YOU MUST HAVE custom fonts then they can be had on WordPress.com, with “Custom Design” – https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-fonts/

However you do have to pay for the premium upgrade ($99) if you want to use that. I do not work for WordPress, so can’t advise you on that upgrade, nor do I endorse it. Simply you must make your own decision or ask WordPress.com staff. Within that I have already hinted at “the simplest solution”.

    @vanmonoz
    Hi there,
Have you consulted this support doc? https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

Have you located you detailed theme description page at https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/forever/ ?

If you have not purchased the Premium upgrade bundle which includes the custom design upgrade, then note that no changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side) will be visible to visitors.

If you are referring only to the text inside of your posts and pages and you can code, you can make some changes without an upgrade. If you want to make changes to titles then you need the premium upgrade bundle that includes the custom design upgrade in it.

If you are into fiddling about with font families, sizes and/or colors on each and every post you make by using the Text editor (HTML editor) then you can change it in the body text in posts and pages. But for changing it in Titles and widget headings you need to purchase an upgrade bundle that contains the custom design upgrade. See here Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/

These are 3 ways to change fonts on WordPress.com blogs.

    (1) Changing font families, colors and size in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page by coding into the Text ie. HTML editor. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/formatting-text-pt-5/

    (2) Changing font colors in text in posts or pages either post by post or page by page using the #4 icon (Select text color – change the text color) in Row 2 the Visual editor. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2

To display the second row of icons, first select the toolbar toggle icon at the end of row 1 and click it. https://i0.wp.com/en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/kitchensink.png
    Then see here https://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#text-color

    (3) Changing all font families, colors and sizes throughout the whole blog by purchasing an annually renewable Premium upgrade bundle.

    See:
    Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/

If you purchase the upgrade please use this link https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform so you can copy and paste your text into a thread that will appear in the CSS Forum where you will get the help you need.

Thankyou for all the answers they are very helpful, Since this is a hobby blog to keep my family and friends informed, upgrading to premium and paying is something I would like to avoid. So I guess I am stuck on the predetermined title fonts and sizes, no biggie. And I will try the other 2 methods described tmiethief see if I can at least use one of my fonts on posts and pages. Beacause it is a custom font purchased to a sort of charity (www.homelessfonts.org) I am not sure it will work, as Itmay only work with web fonts or something, but I will try.

    Thanks again

    Hi Sergio,

It looks like you received all the information and guidance you may need.

I totally understand your desire to maintain a free site! So, one last recommendation for you…

Have you thought about looking into other themes that might have the character size/color/etc that you want? You do not have to stick with Forever if it doesn’t suit you. Forever ISN’T Forever, is what I’m saying :)

Not all themes were built equal, after all, and some might already have the aesthetics you wish. Here’s the theme showcase:

Please let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks much!

    Thankyou!
As much as we may want to, true! nothing is forever…
So I will look into other themes that would accomodate that need. However, I feel it will not work as these are .ttf fonts that I bought from a site, so I am not sure of there is a theme that allows to upload your own fonts from you computer on the free version of wordpress.com

    Any insight will help!

    Thanks, this forum works great!

Hello again! Nice to hear from you.

You are correct — you cannot upload TTF fonts to any WordPress.com site. Free or Premium.

The only way to choose custom fonts is with the upgrade.

However, different themes do display different fonts. Maybe another theme has a default font you prefer.

If you really want to use those plugins, maybe a self-hosted site is what you need:

Drop me a note if you have more questions or concerns! Cheers :)

    Thankyou Thatrobyn.
As it turns out the font I bought is not webready, so there is no real solution, unless I post the text as a jpeg or some weird workaround like that.
Anyway it has still helped me to get more insight onto WP, I am slowly learning all the ins and outs!

    cheers
