Change Gallery widget? HELP
-
I get spam on the Gallery image carousel on my blog. When I click on an image, not only does it have space for comments but it reveals the camera settings the image was taken at! This makes my gallery ripe for theft. I can find no place I authorized this or how to change it.
I’ve asked support how to change this but got no answers. Anyone?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
I get spam on the Gallery image carousel on my blog. When I click on an image, not only does it have space for comments…
In the topic Disabling comments in image gallery carousel, staff member designsimply says:
…to turn off comments for a given image, go to Media → Library…and click on the image you’d like to update, click the “Screen Options” tab at the top right and make sure the “Discussion” option is checked, then find the Discussion box on the same page, uncheck the options for “Allow comments” and “Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page,” and save changes.
See also the response by chaitanyamsv in the more recent topic “Gallery Widget.”
Regarding removal of image EXIF information see the forum topic “How do I strip the exif information from all of the photos in my media gallery?,” and the forum topic search results for the tag combination “remove EXIF data.”
In the cited topic, staff member amightywp says:
If you have uploaded photos with EXIF information attached to it, our software does not have any functionality which will strip it and discard it. You can set your site to not display the EXIF information as @timethief mentioned previously, however if the information is already embedded in the image then we do not remove that.
He then provided a couple of recommendations.

Thanks for all this. But…it doesn’t fix the issue in the Gallery Widget. I have comments disallowed on older posts so it isn’t carrying forward to the widget. None of the suggestions seem to apply. The images in my gallery widget aren’t attached to a page. This has been a problem for years on WP and it would seem they would be more responsive to fix it.

I have comments disallowed on older posts so it isn’t carrying forward to the widget.
That’s right, but it’s irrelevant to the means of disabling comments on individual images as I will explain presently.
None of the suggestions seem to apply. The images in my gallery widget aren’t attached to a page.
I don’t find that page attachment of images is relevant to the suggestions. Even though the relevant suggestion in the initial post by designsimply, in the topic “Disabling comments in image gallery carousel,” is preceded by a statement regarding comment check boxes being added to attachment pages, and in the relevant post by chaitanyamsv in the cited topic, Gallery Widget, he makes a distinction between Gallery Widget and Gallery Page, in each case those points are, I believe, irrelevant to the suggestion as to how to disable comments on individual images. In each case the setting change(s) referred to are to be made at the Edit Media page of an image selected from the Media Library, not to an attachment page or a gallery page.
chaitanyamsv says:
Go to Dashboard > Media > Library > Click on the image for which you wish to disable the comments > Click on the ” Edit more details ” > Scroll down to find Discussion module ( if this is missing, enable it from Screen Options) > Un-select Allow comments.
I didn’t find the “Edit more details” tab he refers to, but this step is unnecessary (possibly due to an update since February 2015). If the Discussion module is enabled at Screen Options, then it will display below the image, and contain an “Allow comments” box which you may uncheck. I’ve tested this, and found the check box you need.
designsimply’s directions are essentially the same, worded differently. She says:
…to turn off comments for a given image, go to Media → Library…and click on the image you’d like to update, click the “Screen Options” tab at the top right and make sure the “Discussion” option is checked, then find the Discussion box on the same page, uncheck the options for “Allow comments”…
This has been a problem for years on WP and it would seem they would be more responsive to fix it.
You may call for staff attention by adding a “modlook” tag to the sidebar of this topic. Alternatively, you might wish to resubmit the issue to the Ideas forum.

First, thank you for taking the time to help. I have tried all the suggestions I read. The issue is that none of the images have comments or discussion enabled/checked in the drop down screen options. So there isn’t anything to uncheck. But, when I click on an image in the gallery that pesky comment box shows up.
I have tried enabling them by checking, then taking the check off. No change. When I said WP should have addressed this, it is because having check boxes that have no affect seems odd. They should be responsive without having to jump through hoops.
I’m not sure how I will handle this issue. I used the gallery rather than set up a gallery page because it seemed straight forward. It’s disappointing that easy came with a set of problems.
Again, thank you for helping.

@ janicepd,
You’re welcome. Sorry the suggestion didn’t work. I should have said that I hadn’t tested whether unchecking the box would in fact eliminate the comments on the gallery widget as it presumably is supposed to. Hopefully staff will be able to either fix the issue, or get the ball rolling on producing a fix.
Regards, doc -
@janicepd – @musicdoc1 is correct that for each image in your Gallery widget, you must edit the image in your site’s Media Library to turn off commenting. Unfortunately there is no shortcut or “bulk edit” like there is with Posts and Pages.
This may seem like it is repeating a lot of the information that you’ve already received, but I hope this step-by-step instruction will help.
Go to your Media Library, and first make sure that the Media Library is displaying in List view and not Grid view. If you need to switch views there are two icons at the top of the page to do so.
Then when you are in List view, hover your cursor over the image title or thumbnail until you see the word Edit appear and click it. In the next screen look for the Discussion module (screenshot). Uncheck the two boxes in the Discussion Module and then save your changes. If you don’t see the Discussion module, you may need to enable it from the Screen Options tab at the top right of the window.
You can also do this in Grid view by clicking on each image and when the next screen opens, click on Edit More Details. That will put you on the screen where you can edit your Discussion Module. I find that the List view is easier because I can open a number of tabs and handle several images at once.
As I mentioned, there’s no shortcut to disallowing comments on images that have already been uploaded. Let us know how you get on with that.
If you want to know how to disallow comments on images that you upload in the future, just let me know.

Thank you Jennifer…that has all been done. None of the images have boxes checked so nothing to uncheck. Thanks for trying!
-
In that case, I’ll leave this for Staff since they are the only ones who can see your site settings directly.
If you are interested, you can take a screenshot and share the link here of what you see in the Discussion module of one of your images. https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/
(Lovely work BTW!)

Just a correction to my last post:
The phrase “unchecking the box…” should have been “unchecking the boxes,” since each image in the media library has its own Discussion module and “Allow comments” box to uncheck.
-
Unchecking the “Discussion: allow comments” checkbox here:
https://janicepainedawes.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=3223&action=edit
…And then clicking update, turned off the comments for that image.
-
Well Josh, you are right that what you did took comments off that image. I just looked again at all my images on the carousel and comments show up and every one of them in my view does NOT have any boxes checked. Any idea why you can see or do something I can’t do? I have looked at this is the library, both in thumbnail and list view, when I do drop down on the the screen options, there are NO boxes checked but when I look at the carousel again, comments show up under the images.??????

@janicepd – staff-ozmodiar is Staff and can see every user’s Dashboard settings.
From your description, it sounds to me like you may be looking somewhere else for that “Discussion” setting. This setting has to be changed in Discussion module in the Edit Media screen. That’s why I suggested the screenshot.
What screen are you trying to do this from?
-
FWIW-the Discussion module is not in a drop down menu (see again my screenshot), but getting to it to appear on the Edit Media screen is.
-
Thanks Jennifer, the drop down I referred to is the screen options menu. I don’t have the discussion module at the bottom. I have taken a screenshot but I don’t know if it shows . So I’ll cut and copy at the bottom, each has a box next to it that has NO check in it, but it is still showing in the gallery widget. We are talking about the same thing, just in different ways.

Janice, I will not be able to see that screenshot image as you have given the Edit link for that image. Only you and Staff can see that.
If you want to share that screenshot in the forums, you need to post the direct URL to the image itself, which normally ends in dot JPG or PNG or GIF.
Meantime, here’s a screenshot of what I see in the Screen Options drop down menu in the Edit Media screen: https://cldup.com/qJ0P0QRbLd.jpg

What you show is exactly what mine looks like with one big difference….nothing has check marks in it! I know some of you may think I’m a newbie on the other side of the monitor, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I have used computers for years and am always up on the latest. I am not a programmer or coder. I guess that’s why this is so frustrating.
Hopefully STAFF will take a look if they can see the screenshot. I added the tag again for modlook. -

Thank you jennifer!! That was as a very long way around instructions saying, “In the screen options at the top right of the page, check [comments]. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and uncheck [comments]. Just call me a simpler girl, but I write instructions for patterns and assume the reader knows nothing, starting from scratch.
I will mark this as resolved. And thank you for the compliment on my work!

@ janicepd,
Glad you’ve got the issue resolved. : )That was as a very long way around instructions saying, “In the screen options at the top right of the page, check [comments]. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and uncheck [comments].
In the “Disabling comments in image gallery carousel” topic, designsimply said, as I quoted above in my second post here:
…to turn off comments for a given image, go to Media → Library…and click on the image you’d like to update, click the “Screen Options” tab at the top right and make sure the “Discussion” option is checked, then find the Discussion box on the same page, uncheck the options for “Allow comments”…
In my second post in this topic, I also said,
In each case the setting change(s) referred to are to be made at the Edit Media page of an image selected from the Media Library…
