  Do I need to purchase the WordPress template to be able to alter header text size and get rid of search bar?

  If u=you are referring to a free hosted WordPress.com blog like http://tasterunits.wordpress.com/ then you must purchase annually renewable custom design upgrade and do the required CSS editing.

  To get rid of the search bar:

  Add this to the CSS editor:

  #branding #searchform {
  display:none;
  }

  If you wish, you can add the Search widget to your sidebar instead.
