Change in Gallery Slideshow Behavior
-
With reference to this thread, https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/strange-behavior-of-slideshows-they-work-only-if-the-size-is-set-to-medium?replies=6#post-2488707
Is it new that the Gallery Slideshow takes the size parameter? To the best of my knowledge, until now the Slideshow ignored this parameter and displayed images and the slideshow background the entire width of the theme’s content container. Even in the Gallery Support doc the size parameter is only mentioned with regards to the default thumbnail Gallery. https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/#gallery-shortcode
When creating the Gallery Slideshow in the Add Media/Media Manager, in my test post selecting “Medium” under Size didn’t result in the size parameter appearing in the resulting Gallery shortcode in the Text tab of the Post Editor.
[gallery type="slideshow" ids="6817,6816,6815"]Manually adding size=”thumbnail” to the shortcode DID result in thumbnail images sitting in the middle of the full width slideshow background.
Any enlightenment by Staff would be appreciated.

I’m not in Staff but I’m interested too on this issue.
In my case, when I choose “thumbnail”, nothing appears in the text tab, indeed.
When I choose any of the other three settings, it does appears size=”medium” or size=”large” or size=”full” in the shortcode. But I have to say that I use the “old” post editor.
-
I use the WP Admin Post Editor as well.
I may have confused you with my above point. The size=”medium” was not added to the shortcode after I selected it in the Add Media/Media Manager initally. I added the size=”thumbnail” manually. (Win7Pro-64bit/Chrome latest)
Now on a different computer (WinXP Pro SP3/Chrome latest) when creating a new Gallery in the Add Media/Media Manager and selecting the slideshow with image size=”medium”, it does now appear in the gallery shortcode.
[gallery type="slideshow" size="large" ids="6817,6816,6815"]Confusing.
-
Or size=”large” because I need to look at what I am copy/pasting before I hit the submit button. :)
-
No, I’m not confused. I understand you perfectly. It seems to me that when nothing appears in the shortcode, that means “thumbnail”. All other three seem OK.
But is it possible the type of the computer or the browser to be responsible for these changes?
It’s strange, isn’t it? -
It seems to me that when nothing appears in the shortcode, that means “thumbnail”.
Not where the slideshow is involved.

WordPress.org says the default gallery image size is thumbnail, so if you select thumbnail, it does not specify a size parameter when inserting the shortcode.
WordPress.com knows, though, that actual thumbnail-sized images look pretty terrible in a full-width slideshow (do you disagree?). So, if no size is specified in the shortcode, it uses full sized images instead.
If you add size=”thumbnail” to your code you can force thumbnail-sized images in your slideshow, as awful as that looks. Go ahead and give it a shot :)
All other sizes should insert themselves into the shortcode and are indeed reflected in the size of the images displayed in the slideshow, though “medium” and “large” can sometimes fill the frame as well as “full” depending on your media settings and the images you’re using.
Usually with a slideshow gallery it’s a moot point, because slideshows work best with images that fill the frame. But in some cases (like in that thread where the person has 181 images in a single slideshow) it makes sense to limit the size.
Hope that helps.
And I hope you’ll try the new editor (the one that’s about to be released). It makes setting up galleries a whole lot faster and less complicated :)

I did. It was.

I did, gave feedback on horizon, too. But I’ll hold my comments about how “less complicated” it is until I can really get to using it. :)

@supernovia Just to clarify – thumbnail is the default size for the native WP Thumbnail Grid Gallery.
If no size parameter is added to the Slideshow type Gallery, it seems the “default” is full size. I could be wrong, but historically that is how it’s been. (Full size not being the full size of the image itself but the width of the theme’s content container.)
If I remember correctly the Gallery “styles” (slideshow, square tiles, circle and tiled mosaic) are not native to WP standalone, but part of jetpack.
-
The styles are a part of Jetpack, but the media > insert gallery feature itself is part of WordPress.org .
Let’s do this: what do you think the default behavior should be when inserting slideshow galleries? I’ll pass that feedback along.
-

Yup, it’s part of core.
Just looking again at the New Editor and when creating a Gallery, the size option only appears now on the default Thumbnail grid. So, let’s wait and see what develops, but thanks for asking. :)
-
Thinking about that, I really wish this was updated in core as well. The options currently available when creating a Gallery in the WP Admin Post/Page Editor can easily confuse users.
-
Yeah, the new editor is all about keeping things really simple for people, as much as possible. And you can manage WordPress.org sites via the new interface as well.
