Change in my blog as of yesterday
-
I have been a wordpress user for many years now.
As of yesterday when I clicked on my blog to start a new
post I was TOTALLY confused – what happened to my old
format? Now I am confronted with a blank white screen –
none of the former ‘things/tools’ I used to use to compose
a blog. I am NOT a computer techie, hence I have NO IDEA
what to do to change all this! I used to be able to click on
stored photos/media, add categories, etc.; now I am left
with a blank white screen and no idea where to go from
here.
I did notice there was a small column on the left that
said: Free domain with a plan. I clicked on that – am I
now forced to pay for using the site? -
Hi there, the Classic Editor in the MySite dashboard was a WPcom in-house product that was retired in favor of the block editor which has been the default Editor in the WordPress open-source software since 2018. You can read about the change in this blog post https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/ If you are not already subscribed to the WordPress.com blog, I highly recommend it
While the original Classic WP Editor is now available for everyone in WP Admin (and you should be familiar with it since that’s what we used prior to the New dashboard editor introduced here in 2015) , just be aware that it is likely a temporary solution since it is being made available via the Classic Editor plugin that WPcom installed for us. We users do not know how long that will be supported.
If you choose to write in WP Admin’s Classic editor, open up a test post or page and start dabbling in the Classic block https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/ or the full Block Editor https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/ The more you use it, the easier it will become and you’ll be ahead of the game when the Classic Editor is finally retired.
More information about the change to the Block Editor here: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-com-classic-editor-deprecation-faqs/
Post back here after reading those guides if you have more questions.
