Change in Slideshow Navigation/Caption visibility

  Where once the navigation arrows, and I’m assuming also the image caption, were invisible in the WP slideshow until one hovered one’s cursor over the slideshow area, the navigation buttons and captions are now persistent during slideshow playback. This really detracts from viewing the slideshow content.

  You can see it at work on the Support doc for Slideshows http://en.support.wordpress.com/slideshows/ where it isn’t so painful, but where the images are sized differently, the navigation sits right on top of the images. Examples:

  Hi Jennifer!

  I just dug into the code to figure out what changed here. We made these changes to make our Slideshows more accessible. The way the controls are now means that they can be toggled via keyboard without use of a mouse or via screenreaders. The addition of Titles and Alt text to the images makes them navigable via screenreaders as well.

  Thanks @shawanajroberts-Accessibility and usability don’t have to contradict one another. Maybe the layout/size of the slideshow needs a review and rethink.

  I’ve put up 2 slideshows in the sidebar of my test site (one in a text widget and one in the Gallery widget) for a different reason, but it’s worth looking at because of the Gallery widget’s slideshow. For all intents, it’s currently unusable.

  Hmm. I agree, that’s not great with the new controls overlaid. Thanks for laying that out. I’ll bring it up with the devs that made the change and see if they can rework the Gallery widget so it still looks good.

  No coffee for me, but I’ve got some great strawberry pear juice right now! ;)

  Hey @shawnajroberts, Happy Valentine’s Day. Still waiting for some love in the Gallery slideshow navigation and not just for the Gallery widget. As I mentioned in my first post (with examples), the navigation also affects the in-post/in-page slideshow as well. Thanks.

  Hi Jen,

  Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day to you too! Hope you had a great one. Shawna is out over the weekend so I’m grabbing a few of her tickets. I am not sure who was working on the main slideshow functionality fix, so I have reposted about it just in case. Even if it fell through the cracks somewhere at least it should get some attention now!
