Change menu option in exisiting blog

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I would like to change the nav menu option under Destinations from
“South East Asia” to just “Asia”.
Reason for the change is that I will be including China, so, an oversight when I built the menu structure a couple of years’ ago.

I’d like to know if I change the menu label, will this break any links to posts, my site, or anything else?

    Many thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi nilla2014,

I’d like to know if I change the menu label, will this break any links to posts, my site, or anything else?

Great question! If you change your menu label, all of your links will still work correctly.

The links to your blog posts are set as the following: https://imageearthtravel.com/YYYY/MM/DD/title-of-blog-post/
Since they don’t reference your menu name in the link, none of your blog post links will change or break.

The link to your site will also remain the same and not be affected by changing your menu.

To change the name of a menu item, follow the instructions fond here: Custom Menus

Let me know if you have any follow up questions!

  • Hi there,

I see that your menu is set up by linking to categories assigned to each blog post. Changing a category name could cause issues with your links.

Individual posts do not have the category name in the URL. Links to individual posts will remain the same.

What would change are the menu links, such as: https://imageearthtravel.com/category/south-east-asia/laos/
    which reference particular categories.

One thing you can do is change the Navigation Label for your menu item “South East Asia” to “Asia”. This would only change the name of the item as it appears on the menu, not the name of the actual category. Your links however will will still show the category: “South East Asia” in the URL.

To change the Navigation Label go to wp-admin (https://imageearthtravel.wordpress.com/wp-admin/), choose Appearance, then Menus. In the Menu Structure area find the link you want to change, click on the arrow to the right of the link name to open the options. Type in your new link name in the Navigation Label box, then click the Save Menu button. Refresh your webpage to see the new menu name.

Another option is to create a new category, “Asia”, then setup that particular menu with the corresponding sub-menus. In this case your new URL would be: https://imageearthtravel.com/category/asia/laos/

Then, you’ll have to go back and assign the corresponding blog posts to that new category. Finally, you can delete the old category and old menu item.

Many thanks for all the help!

Yes, I thought that this link would be broken if I changed things

I don’t really want to go through 54 posts as it’s too time-consuming to change any links that I have within the posts as I have many.

I may need to just change the Menu label, which as you say, will still display the “South East Asia” – not optimal but at least links won’t be broken.

    Hello @nilla2014

Changing the menu label is a good, simple solution for sure.

I also wanted to mention that if you would also like to change the category of a bunch of posts, you can use the “Bulk Actions” editor tool in your wp-admin interface – https://imageearthtravel.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

So, if you would like to apply a new category, first create the category as staff-eleanor suggests above.

Then, when you are looking at your list of posts in wp-admin, select a bunch of the posts you want to change the categories of, then choose “Bulk Actions” (above the list, at left) then “Edit” and then “Apply”. That will bring up a dialog box that will allow you to check and uncheck categories on multiple posts at once.

I understand why you might not want to bother if it involves combing through old posts, but if you’d like to apply a new category to those posts going forward I thought I would mention it in case it is of help!

Sorry for the late response @uxcitizen and thank you for your suggestion.

I’m undecided if I want to change this as I don’t really want to risk breaking any links.

Maybe the easiest way forward is just to add another menu item named ‘Asia’ when I start writing about China, etc. I guess it’s not the best solution but better than breaking any links. :)
