change my primary domain to a custom domain registered with GoDaddy but already pointing to wordpres

  • Unknown's avatar

I kinda set things up backwards and now I’m stuck. I first set up this WordPress account. Second, purchased a domain from GoDaddy without a hosting plan. Then I signed up for hosting with another company called PostHaven for $5. I don’t have a lot of money to spend on this, just trying to set up a fun blog for sharing ideas. I was able to change my DNS to point to WordPress, and can no longer manage DNS from GoDaddy, but in order to set up my hosting on PostHaven I need to set up an A Record. My custom domain is not added to WordPress, but I want to make it my primary, how can I do this? Do I still have to upgrade to premium? I’ve already spent more money on this venture than I originally planned and do not wish to spend more to change my domain on WordPress or to get a managed WordPress hosting plan through GoDaddy. Can anyone help me work this out, PLRASE.

Greetings, my free site worked this morning and now it’s down after I purchased domain mapping. Who can help me in the support team validate my purchase.

  • Hi there,

Do you want to use the domain with your WordPress.com site, or with PostHaven? You can’t do both.

To use your domain with WordPress.com, you need to purchase one of our plans under My Site ->Plans, and then add the domain mapping upgrade included in the plan.

Use a Domain You Already Own (Domain Mapping)

If you want to use the domain with PostHaven, you should not point the name servers to WordPress.com. In that case you must either point the name servers to PostHaven directly, or point them back to GoDaddy and add PostHaven’s A records over there. You won’t have access to DNS settings on WordPress.com without a domain mapping upgrade.

I want to use it with my WordPress, I don’t mind letting the $5 go, since they only bill monthly. My big problem here is that when I attempt to map my domain, it automatically directs me to the Premium upgrade, which is a bit pricey for me. I wish you had a shorter term than annual, because I simply do not have $99 to pay right now. Is it possible to map my domain to a basic plan, and how do I get around the automatic redirect to the premium upgrade?
For the time being, I believe I have successfully redirected my DNS back to GoDaddy, so if there is no way to do this om the less costly plan, I may still be able to sign up for GoDaddy’s managed WordPress hosting. If there is a way to do this on the basic plan, I think hosting through WordPress would be the better option. Thanks.

Oh, BTW thanks for dropping that not to @laurenbklein I wanted to say something but didn’t want to come off the wrong way being a newbie myself.

  • You can use your domain here with the Personal Plan as well. First go to My Site ->Plans and add the Personal Plan to your site. After paying for the plan, go to My Site ->Domains ->Add and add the domain mapping. That way Premium won’t be added by default.

Let me know if you need more help with this :)

Thank you. I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to find the answer I needed, but you have been very helpful, I think we can pretty much call this one resolved.

  • Glad I could help :)
