Change my web address

  So I just finished editing my first blog and the whole website is done and ready to go. However I am beginning to not like the web address I chose because I want something timeless in case my blog takes a different turn in the future. So I went to try and change it but I was confused with all the cautions listed before actually going through with the process. What exactly does ‘transfer traffic’ mean? I have not yet officially posted my blog for everyone to see so I haven’t received any comments or emails. I am just curious if I could change my web address and still keep everything I have finalized on my blog? Please help and thank you.

  It lists down these warnings –

  If you want to change the title of the blog, which is the text displayed in the title bar of a web browser and in the header of most themes, you can do so under My Site → Customizer → Site Identity.

  If you want to get rid of the wordpress.com part of your blog address, then you need to upgrade to a Custom Domain by visiting the Domains page.

  If you follow this guide and change your blog address, link to your old address, including search engine results, will be broken unless you add a Site Redirect upgrade.

  Now to answer your question –

  If you’ve not published your blog publicly and if it was private all along (only visible to you) then you don’t have to worry about the transfer traffic thing.

  What exactly does ‘transfer traffic’ mean?

  Lets say you have XYZ.wordpress.com and you have followers on that site. Then you decide to change it to ABC.wordpress.com but people still visit XYZ.wordpress.com because they don’t know you switched to a new address.

  In that case, if you discard the old address, people won’t be able to find your new address. But if you keep it and provide a redirect (which is paid) then people will be automatically redirected from XYZ.wordpress.com to ABC.wordpress.com

  Yes you can. The only decision that you have to make is do you want to discard your old address permanently? Because if you do, then you won’t be able to use that address again (at least for the next two years).
