Change name of my blog’s contributor’s

  • Unknown's avatar

Am I discovering accurately (after putting in dozens of hours here in setup)…

That it’s not possible for us to control our blog’s contributor names?

We need to be able to add/invite a user and be able to control that contributor’s avatar and full name.

Is that a limitation of WordPress.com? It’ll be a blocker for us, and we’ll have to look elsewhere.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Unknown's avatar

And the bios would need to be unique to our blog as well, and controlled by us.

  • Mahalo @joeyaloha Totoro has spent much time on Oahu so it’s nice to see some familiar views. Almost even miss sitting in H1 traffic westbound, but maybe not so much. :)

We need to be able to add/invite a user and be able to control that contributor’s avatar and full name.

By default on WordPress.com we manage all logins for the highest security possible, and this is not something that can be changed on sites that use our shared cloud hosting resources (Personal and Premium Plan sites included) so you would not have control over those presently.

However, you can gain control over all aspects of the account creation process (where you create user names, have access to set avatar and author profiles, etc.) by upgrading to the Business Plan. This plan also will have the option of allowing you to install any plugin or theme “designed for WordPress” so you would have the most customization options possible.

I should add that you would not pay the pricing you see here, we take into account your recent purchase and only charge you the difference in cost between the two plans.

If cost is an issue then yes you may wish to “self-host” your site, which you can do with just about any hosting provider. It’s not totally free (since you still would have to pay hosting costs and possibly have other fees such as SSL) but it is one way that you can go. Self-hosted WordPress sites don’t have the performance/security advantages of our managed hosting, but they are more cost effective and will allow you to shop around on price and hosting features.

The primary downside is that WordPress is just one of the many platforms that hosting providers will allow you to install on your account, so they do not offer WordPress-specific support. That can feel a little too DIY for most folks, so if you are new to WordPress and it’s in your budget I definitely recommend staying. Once you gain familiarity in the platform you would have the option to migrate to another provider at any time.

Hope that helps, and if you have any questions feel free to drop them here! m/
