Change Name Servers and security warning

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I follow step by step the procedure to change the name servers. But I got a security warning from Chrome (your connexion is not secure etc…). I temporarily canceled the change of name servers to take those of wordpress.com

Do you know how to fix this problem ?

    Thank you,

  • Hi there,

    This is normal.

As your hosting provider, we enable SSL on your domain automatically so it loads over a https connection.

But if you change the name servers, it means you are pointing the domain to a different host and that causes our SSL certificate to no longer work. If you don’t have SSL enabled at that host, you will see a warning if you open the domain over HTTPS.

For the first few days you also won’t be able to open the domain over http due to what is called a HSTS header – an instruction in your browser that tells it to always load the domain over https, no matter how the link is entered. That header will delete itself automatically in a few days, and then you’ll be able to use the domain over http.

Of course, you can always enable SSL at the new hosting provider. That is really the better option, as it will ensure all traffic to your site remains encrypted.

Ok, I understand. I changed the name servers yestersay. I don’t have a security warning anymore. But it seems like other servers are able to find my NS record but not my A record. It’s part of the DNS propagation ?

  • It can take up to 72 hours for the name server change so fully complete, so before that some people might still access the DNS on our end instead of at your new host, yes.

Another possibility is the browser cache – browsers also locally store the IP addresses of websites so they don’t have to look it up again the next time you type in the link. Clearing the browser cache should fix that.
