Change of theme

    Hi! I have used the theme, HandMade since 2012. It is an old theme not being updated anymore. I have looked for a substitute and think I want to go with GateWay. However I would like to make the changes (I have a bit of css and probably have to make som more for my site to look the way I want it to) before going “live”. Is that a possibility? And if it is, how do I do it?

    Hi Åsa, we could copy everything to a new, blank site and point your domain to that. Then you can make the old site private and work on it.

    When you’re ready, you’d want to export any new content and import it into the new design. Then we can move stats, and followers back, and point the domain back again. Would that work for you? It’s a bit of a process, but one I’ve used myself when changing the look and feel of my site.

    For what it’s worth, and given you’re going to the trouble to overhaul the site, I do want to point out that Gateway is also an older theme. It’s been a few years since major updates aside from translations. And the newer block-based themes are much more customizable, especially with how well they support patterns (I’d recommend taking a look at those with your site, since the ones demoed there are pretty basic). They’ll be supported for quite some time as well. So if you have questions about setting up one of those themes, let us know.

    Let us know when you’re ready, and we’ll copy the content and point the domain over, then make the old site private so you can start working on it.

    Oh no, Gateway is also an older theme?

    Would you please let me know which themes are new enough to be updated and will continue be so for at least a few years?! I do not want to have to change theme again in a year or so. Thanks!

    There’s no way to know if the developers of that theme will update that theme in the future.

    But, a good rule of thumb is that any of the “Twenty” themes (Twenty Twenty-One, Twenty Twenty, etc) will be updated as they’re the default WordPress themes.

    Otherwise, if you look for themes that are using modern features like the block editor styles, they’ll likely be updated as those features change and evolve.
