Change of website associated with my wordpress account

  • Unknown's avatar

My wordpress account is currently associated with heritageestateslv.com. I had limited access on that site for posting information for our Homeowners association. I no longer have that function. I am the admin for ourladyofwisdom.net, and would like to associate that website with my wordpress account. How can make that change?

  • Hi there!

You will want to remove the site as explained here:

    Jetpack

After that, you can connect the new one:

    Jetpack

    I hope that helps :)

Thank you for the response. I’m still having trouble. When I log into WordPress, there is no “My Sites” link. There’s only “My Site”. When I go to it, I see five options on the left side: The site that MySite is associated with, Site, Manage, WP Admin, and Add new site. – the “Site” dropdown does nothing, nor does the “manage” dropdown. For the associated site, I’m given no choices, it just goes to the site if I click on it.

    Any other recommendations?

  • Ah, it seems like there was an error with the connection, that’s why the buttons did not work. I went ahead and disconnected the site for you.
You can now follow these steps to connect the new site:

    Jetpack

Thank you! The next step is for me to connect the site I’m managing, https://ourladyofwisdom.net, and I’m having trouble there too. The site has JetPack installed and seems to be running ok. I’ve tried to add the site to my WordPress account by choosing “add site”, then selecting “add an existing WordPress site using JetPack” option, but when I fill in “https://ourladyofwisdom.net” and press “continue” , there’s a pause while it’s making the connection, then I’m dropped onto a “page not found” under the ourladyofwisdom heading. I suspect it has something to do with the requirement for the website having a publicly accessible XML-RPC file, but I don’t know how to check for that.

  • I suspect you’re right. It looks okay now from this end, but if it isn’t working there, could you try https://jetpack.com/debug and show it to your host?

You might check the error logs too for the page not found thing.

When I run the debug, it comes back with an unknown error. I would like to take it to my website host, but that’s not much for them to go on.

Something else I’ve found – when I try to add https://ourladyofwisdom.net to my WordPress account, I get an error: “That’s not a valid URL”. I also get the same error when I try to purchase Jetpack backup. But the URL is quite valid.

    Any suggestions?

  • The reason Jetpack can’t connect is because it appears XML-RPC on your site is disabled. That’s the system Jetpack uses to communicate with your site.

If I try to view your site’s XML-RPC file at https://ourladyofwisdom.net/xmlrpc.php it gives a page not found error.

You can see an example of what should be visible at that link here:

    https://kokkieh.blog/xmlrpc.php

Please contact your host and ask them to make sure XML-RPC is enabled on your server. You can give them this page for more details:

    Jetpack

Something else I’ve found – when I try to add https://ourladyofwisdom.net to my WordPress account, I get an error

You can’t add that site from our end. The only way to connect that site to WordPress.com, is by connecting Jetpack from within that site’s dashboard.

If you’re trying to add it to the mobile app, that also uses XML-RPC to communicate with your site.

Thank you. I’ve sent a request to the host to make the correction – I have a few requests in to them, but they are mostly sequestered due to the virus, so are slow in responding.

I did have another question – on my site I set up the JetPack notification for the site going down, and at least a couple times a day I get the notice that it’s down. It’s only down for a few minutes, then it’s back up. Is there anything you can see from the outside that might be causing this, or is there something I should be looking for?

  • If you have Jetpack monitor active, what essentially happens is that we continually send pings to your site, and if the site doesn’t respond for a certain time, we send you a notification that the site is down. So it’s not a perfect system – the site can be online for anyone visiting it in a browser, but if Jetpack can’t reach it, it assumes the site is offline.

You’re most likely receiving these notifications due to the XML-RPC issue, as that’s preventing Jetpack from connecting to your site. If you want, we can disable Monitor for your site from this end until you have the connection issues sorted out, if the emails are too annoying :)

Thank you for your continued patience. I’ve located my root directory and found a xmlrpc.php file in my installation. I copied it to the root, but when I try to view the file at https://ourladyofwisdom.net/xmlrpc.php I get this error:

Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required ‘/data/9/1/27/51/1353540/user/1451341/htdocs/wp-load.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/share/php:/usr/services/vux/lib/php’) in /data/9/1/27/51/1353540/user/1451341/htdocs/xmlrpc.php on line 30

Perhaps copying wasn’t the right approach. Is xmlrpc.php generated from my installation, and I’ve failed to make a connection somewhere?

  • Hi there,

Is xmlrpc.php generated from my installation, and I’ve failed to make a connection somewhere?

Yes, it’s part of the installation. Is the installation in a different directory, and if so could you send a link to that?

  • Unknown's avatar

I think I’m structured wrong. According to the provider, the root is at /htdocs. There are a couple of folders under that which looked promising – WPolow and olow. Both have a directory /wp-content, but only /olow has a directory /wp-admin. I found the xmltpc.php file in the htdocs/olow directory, and a call to https://ourladyofwisdom.net/olow/xmlrpc.php does return the correct result.

This is a very old installation, going back to 2012, and I don’t know the history, but the installation appears to be at //ourladyofwisdom.net/olow.

  • Is the installation up to date, curiously?

Also, can you have your host try this test at a command prompt?

    curl -I https://ourladyofwisdom.net/olow/xmlrpc.php

Thanks for your help. Here’s what I’m running:
    WordPress 5.4.2 running Risen theme.
    Running PHP version: 7.0.2-pl0-gentoo
I just received notice that a PHP update is required.

I submitted a help ticket to my host to run the test. They haven’t been very responsive, but if I don’t get something before Tuesday, I’ll do an online chat.

I also submitted a help ticket about the PHP upgrade. Is that something I could do myself?

  • You’ll need to consult your hosting provider’s documentation for updating PHP. Some do allow you to do it, but they almost all do it differently.

Update: I chatted with the host support desk, and provided them with the script to be run. They have to pass it to their engineering department, so it may take a few days.

For the PHP update, I am only able to update to the latest version on the Network Solutions maintenance page, which is 7.0. Strange – I thought they were supposed to be one of the best host providers.

I’ll be back in contact when I get the results of the script run.

    Thanks for your help!

  • If you run into too much trouble with them, we do have some recommended hosting providers at https://jetpack.com/hosting/

  • Unknown's avatar

They came back and said they can’t help me with running the script unless I have a maintenance contract with them. About a month ago I paid for 2 additional years of hosting … so have asked them to refund that and I will be off their hosting by the August end date. The hosting service is Network Solutions, and they have a good reputation, but this is ridiculous. Sadly, I just paid them for an SSL cert and 2 years of hosting. Hopefully I can get at least some of that refunded.
Thank you for the hosting providers list! It will be very useful.

Thank you again for your help!

Interestingly enough, I told them I am done with them, and they ran the script. They sent the result as a screen shot — is there a way to get that to you? I don’t see any way to upload using this venue. Or should I just type it out – it’s just a few lines long, but I don’t want to make any mistakes.
