Change (or omit) the label of the Comment text box?
-
My theme is Twenty Twelve. For a post or page, if “allow comments” is checked, what appears is the label “Leave a Reply” and a text box with “Enter your comment here …”
Can I, just within CSS, 1) remove or hide that label entirely. 2) change the words inside the textbox to, say, “Comments?” 3) if dealing with a post (rather than a page), there is a link at the top of the post to the text box below. Can I remove (or hide) this link?
(This a WONDERFUL forum!)The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

For 1) and 2) you don’t need CSS. You can change that under Settings ->Discussion in your dashboard: http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#comment-form

Thank you, kokkleh. I took care of 1) completely with your help. For 2) I don’t see how to change the words INSIDE the box … but that’s not so important. What remains only is 3) the link at the top of a post which says “Leave a reply” – it links to the text box below. I’d like to remove (or hide by making it all white) that link.
Every little bit of help from this forum is getting me to my goal. I’m so appreciative. -
Ah, I misread with Nr 2. I can’t help you with the CSS, so please wait for someone else to reply here for an answer to that.

Hi there, on the “Enter your comment here…” if we hide that text, then you cannot enter any text into the comment box. The initial text in that box is a title attribute for that text area, and that cannot be changed with CSS.
To hide the “Leave a comment” link below the title on posts, add the following CSS.
.entry-header .comments-link { display: none; } -
Dear the sacredpath – I guess I was mushy. (As a newby, I’m still learning how to articulate exactly what I mean). I do not want to hide the textbox. I only want to alter the words that appear within it that the viewer sees. Right now the viewer sees “leave your comment here. ” I would like to say something like “Your comments are welcome here.”
The last issue also concerns just the wording on the link at the top of the page. Instead of “Leave a reply”, I would like it to be “Leave a comment.” Is this possible within just CSS?
Thanks for your patience. -
Ah, ok. The text inside of the comment box that the viewer sees (Enter your comment here) cannot be changed. That is set in the theme and WordPress files and we cannot edit those.
On the Leave a reply text at the top under the site title, add the following CSS which will hide the original text and insert your desired text.
.comments-link a { visibility: hidden; } .comments-link a:before { content: "Leave a comment"; visibility: visible; } -
Thankyou, Mr. thesacredpath – Happiness Engineer extraordinaire. You bring me happiness!

oops. I spoke too soon. 1.( Your snippet works as far as replacing the original text over the link with the new text “leave a comment”. Thank you for that! But alas, it also removes that link. That is, when the mouse now hovers over what is supposed to be the link to the textbox at the bottom, nothing happens (i.e – it doesn’t turn into the little hand.) 2. Is it possible for me to look at the css file for my theme (my site is not self hosted, so I don’t have those files on my computer.) – so that I can perhaps learn to be a little more independent!!

Hi there, I just tried the code above on your site and on Firefox, Safari and Chrome, the link works and the cursor turns into the hand icon.
Given that the CSS for WordPress.com is in multiple files, having the file itself will not give you everything. What we recommend is to use the web inspector built into your browser. You can view a brief screencast on our How to Find Your Theme’s CSS support page to get started using it.

Here is the link to the main Twenty Twelve CSS file, but remember not all the CSS for your site is in it.

Yes, of course your code worked perfectly. I had a typo as I was experimenting, commenting it out etc. …never mind …arrgh – mea culpa. And thanks for the pointers to CSS. Looks very daunting.
One last question. You said that you tried the code on my site. I don’t understand how you could have, because I have marked it “private” … unless happiness engineers get to pierce the privacy barrier. It’s ok, I’m NOT complaining … just curious.
Thanks so so soooooooo muchly. -
Yes, Staff have the ability to view private sites, but we only do so when we need to in order to give quick and accurate answers. Rest assured, we treat all private-site content confidentially.
