Change Order of Content Blocks on Front Page in DARA THEME?
-
Hi guys,
I really like the DARA theme and am using it for my website (currently set to private as it is under development): https://wordpress.com/theme/dara
However, I want to change the order of the content blocks on the front page.
So, for example, I want the testimonials near the top (just under the menu bar), as opposed to near the bottom as in the example.
Is this possible? Or should I just stick to smugmug? I don’t mind paying to upgrade if it lets me do this.
Many thanks for your help!
Bryan

Can anyone help me with this? I’m struggling to see if it’s possible to change the order.

To change the order of content blocks you would need Custom CSS, which is available with the Premium or Business plans. The new CSS flexbox technique could be used for that.
If you decide to upgrade, let me know and we can help you with the code.
p.s. sorry I didn’t see your post until now. If you ever need a staff reply in future, be sure to add the tag modlook in the Tags area of your post. More tips on using the forums.

Hi Kathryn,
I really appreciate that. Question: if I use the Dara theme, which I like a lot, and move the blocks around as I say, will that destabilise the site?
-
I’m not sure what you mean by destabilizing the site, could you explain a little bit more?
-
Sure. I mean, i don’t want to change anything beyond the template and then cause weird things to happen — because the theme wasn’t designed to be used that way.
Apart from changing the order of content blocks, I’m quite keen to somehow add a scroll arrow on the front page testimonials section.

Thank you for clarifying!
Any CSS that we provided to you would be tested to ensure it worked well across devices and we’d also attempt to forewarn you of possible issues. It’s true, however, that custom CSS isn’t intended for large layout changes and there may be issues that we not able to foresee.
For the scroll arrow: Are you thinking of a clickable arrow that will scroll down the page? Do you have an example of a site with a similar arrow? If so, I could take a look and let you know if that’s possible with CSS.

Hi siobhyb,
Thank you for the response.
The Dara theme has a pair of boxes side-by-side which randomly display two of your testimonials. But I would like people to see more testimonials, perhaps a select subset of the total testimonials, by clicking an arrow to the left or right of the two boxes so as to scroll to the next one whilst remaining on the homepage.
Many websites have this kind of thing. For example, the following website has a box which you can either click on the arrow to move to the next item or simply leave it a few seconds and it will autoscroll: http://ealingtrailfinders1stxv.com/home The difference is, this site has one box at a time, whereas I would want two as per the Dara theme.
Irksomely, I don’t seem to be able to add photos of what I’m talking about to this post. So I hope you are following me!
Best,
Bryan

Hi Bryan,
There isn’t a way to add a “more” button or create a slider for testimonials on Dara’s home page. A potential workaround is to add a link to the main testimonials page (example from the demo site here) as a link in your site’s footer. You could also manually upload your testimonials as images and then add them to a gallery widget.
If you require the ability to edit your site’s backend code to achieve the specific look you’re after then you could consider moving to a different host and using the free software available at WordPress.org.
If you’re not certain on the differences between the two types of WordPress (WordPress.com and WordPress.org) then I recommend the following guide, which gives a good overview on the two:
If the themes in the WordPress.com repository don’t enable you to create the look you’re after then WordPress.org may be the better solution for you. If you’d like to stick with WordPress.com but still want the option of uploading third-party plugins and themes then you could also consider upgrading to WordPress.com Business.
Let me know if you have extra questions on the above!
