Change paid wordpress account to unpaid

Hello – I’m looking to transition my account to an unpaid account but still have all of my content available online. Not sure what steps are necessary for this?

    Appreciate the help.

    Thanks,
    Mark

It appears you have registered the custom domain mrmarkwysocki.com, which does not expire until April 14, 2014. Do you wish to cancel that domain and just use mrmarkwysocki.wordpress.com?

If you wish to cancel the domain, I can do so for you, but please note that we cannot offer a refund at this time, and once the domain is cancelled, it may not become available again to register elsewhere.

Are you wishing to use mrmarkwysocki.com for a different site?

If you just wish to use the WordPress.com address, you can update your primary domain in your Dashboard under Store > Domains.

Regardless of the address you choose to be associated with your site, your content will remain intact even if you choose not to renew your domain.

    Thanks for the response!

Ok sounds good. Yea I realize that I have until April to make the switch but just wanted to confirm it was possible and I could still maintain the content as needed.

So to clarify, does it make sense for me to wait until April and then look to cancel the domain and adjust to the .wordpress.com version?

    Thanks!

If you just wish to use the WordPress.com address, you can update your primary domain in your Dashboard under Store > Domains.

Do this now – that will help train your visitors about the name change – then some time before the mrmarkwysocki.com. expires, you want to make a Post or three telling people that they need to adjust their bookmarks or something to find your real address (or encourage them to subscribe to your site by email (put the Widget up if you have not already) so they will not be lost)

Yes, I agree with auxclass. Set your primary domain to your WordPress.com address now, but keep the custom domain active. That way if someone goes to mrmarkwysocki.com, they will see mrmarkwysocki.wordpress.com in their address bar. You can post a notice on your blog to update bookmarks or even put a text widget up that announces the change. That way you shouldn’t lose too many people when the domain expires, and Google should have caught up by then.

However, be aware that you can still retain your domain name after you move to a free WordPress.com site from your paid site. You will, of course, have to pay your domain name annual fee of (currently) $18. But it’s your choice whether to retain the name or not.

    * As posters have said above, a free WP site with no custom domain name = an address of “http://mrmarkwysocki.wordpress.com”

    * A free WP site with your retained custom domain name will still be = “http://mrmarkwysocki.com” (your readers need never realize that you’ve given up your paid WP site for a free one).

    * You can also retain your domain name to use with another, totally different site or retain it unused for sometime in the future.
