  How do I change the picture on my home page?

  I assume you mean the header image. > Appearance > Header
  An image that is presized prior to uploading to be 1000 x 288 pixels will be uploaded as is. As the cropper will not come into play if you presize the image before uploading it no image quality will be lost.
