Change post format

I always publish in the Standard format, but my post today was an Aside format. I went to go in and change it and I don’t have the option to change it back to Standard.

I did check my Screen Options and didn’t even see Format listed as an option to show on my page.

So, if I can’t pick a format (based on the theme I’m using) then how did it turn into an Aside, and how do I change it back?

    Thanks for any help!

  • Your most recent post doesn’t appear to be an Aside format. As far as I can tell it’s identical to your other posts. Asides don’t display a title, but your most recent post does.

On what screen did you try to change the post format? The only place that is possible is from the post editor.

Go to Posts ->All Posts on your dashboard and click Edit under the title of the relevant post (not Quick Edit) to go to the full post editor. The dialogue box with format options should be there. It might be minimised or it might be disabled in the screen options. If it doesn’t appear at all it may be that your theme doesn’t support post formats.

Unfortunately it seems your theme has been retired. You can still use it, but the support doc for it no longer exists so I cannot check which post formats if any it supports.

I don’t have a picture showing up in the “reader”, so that’s when I started investigating and my dashboard list of all posts -> All Posts told me that the post was in Aside.

I did go to full edit, and the dialog box where I could change the format was missing. So, that’s when I checked Screen Options to see if the box just wasn’t displaying, and there isn’t an option to make it display.

Thanks for your feedback, it helps to know that I tried everything there was to try – have no clue how it happened, but I guess I’ll live with it. And start searching for a theme that hasn’t been retired!

  • I’ll tag this for staff to follow up. They might be able to fix it.

Here’s a trick that may work. Switch temporarily to another theme that has post formats like Twenty Eleven, etc. Then edit the post and change the Aside to a Standard post format. Click the Update button. Lastly, switch themes back to the one you have now.
