change primary site name/address

  • Unknown's avatar

I have not activated my page yet, but found there are too many names similar to mine, so I would like to change my primary site name/address. Under Account Settings, it lets me change the Web address, but not the Primary Site. Should I just delete this and start over?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    <re: changing a .wordpress.com address
We cannot edit any blog URLs. If you want to change the .wordpress.com blog address ie. the URL starting with http:// then you must be logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog to do that and the URL you desire must be available. If so, then you can change the URL by using the guide http://en.support.wordpress.com/changing-blog-address/ Then all the content will be the same only the URLs will change and nothing else.

Be sure to locate the correct page http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dashboard-e1371648470893.png

Changing a URL is meant to be a permanent and irreversible act. No changed or deleted blog URLs are recycled here, regardless of who registered and deleted them and the only exceptions are made are for URLs that were deleted 2 or more years ago

To me it looks like https://dchschoirscom.wordpress.com/ has been activated. Do you mean another site? If yes, post the URL please.

  • Unknown's avatar

That’s the site. Interesting, because the email that I got to “click the button below to confirm your email and activate your account,” I never clicked that because I hadn’t finished building the site. Haven’t paid for it either. I was never ready for this to go public yet.

The Admin login link for that site is https://dchschoirscom.wordpress.com/wp-admin

I never make new sites private because that means there is a private site robots txt display in the Google search results if you do that. It takes weeks for Google to display indexed content in the SERPs and it takes lots of frequent publishing of posts, not pages to drive the private site robot txt results down in search results.

That said, not to worry about access, as this thread is tagged for Staff help.

    Hi there,

I have not activated my page yet

dchschoirscom.wordpress.com is showing as activated. Do you have another site?

    Haven’t paid for it either.

Your site is using the free plan, so there are no charges :)

Under Account Settings, it lets me change the Web address, but not the Primary Site.

You only have one site in the WordPress.com account you are logged in to. Can you tell me more about what you would like to do?

I was never ready for this to go public yet.

If you aren’t ready for the site to be visible to the public, you can set it to ‘private’ in your privacy settings:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello Gemma,
You were kind enough to reply in the forum to my dilemma. Here is what began my discussion: I would like to change my Primary Domain from “dchschoirs.com” to “douglascountychoirs.com”. I discovered that if someone were to search for us on google, there are many other schools and organizations that use DCHS, therefore, I would prefer to spell out our name. I already checked and the new domain is available.

The only thing I can think of is closing my site and starting over. Is there and easier way? (I have set my site to private now, as I don’t want it accessed until I’m ready for the school to see it). If you can help me change it, I will change it so you can access it.

    Thank you so much! Dana

    Hi Dana,

I would like to change my Primary Domain from “dchschoirs.com” to “douglascountychoirs.com”.

The domain dchschoirs.com is no longer registered and it looks like you didn’t purchase it through WordPress.com. Do you want to add a domain to dchschoirscom.wordpress.com?

There is no need to close the site and start over. You can register douglascountychoirs.com and use it on your existing WordPress.com site. There is more information about registering a domain in this guide:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-domain/

Once a custom domain is active on your site, visitors will no longer see your default WordPress.com address (dchschoirscom.wordpress.com).

    Hi Gemma,
I have the site all set up and the pages are being worked on, I just have it set to private. Is it because of the private setting that you are unable to see it? I will change it if that is the case.
    Dana

    Hi Dana,

I just have it set to private. Is it because of the private setting that you are unable to see it?

Don’t worry, I can see the private site in your account but it won’t be visible to the public just yet :)

I’m glad to hear the link was helpful, let me know if you need any further help.
