Change Reader feed scripting so FEATURE IMAGE is displayed over video or gallery
-
Hello,
I’ve noticed over the past year that whenever there is a post that contains a video or a gallery, the feed for the Reader shows those items over the feature image.
I can only speak for myself, but I imagine that all of your users would want the feature image to be the default image to show in your Reader feed. It is, after all, called the Feature Image so it should be featured yes?
Many bloggers, like myself, spend a great deal of time crafting and honing this feature image to be the first thing that readers see when visiting our blogs. It’s shown “above the fold” on our pages for a reason.
To pull a video or gallery from the body of a post can often be taken out of context or simply be less visually pleasing.
I’m proposing that the Feature Image be the default image shown in the Reader feed and if no Feature Image is present, then pull the video or gallery mages.
Any thoughts?
yours,
James

Hi there,
Confession: I looked at your site just to see how the featured images were showing up in your theme and got sucked in! Great blog! Awesome content!
There is a way to work around this problem which was discovered by another user:
I later went into that post and clicked on the ‘add media’ button. Then I clicked on ‘media library’. There is a drop down menu that gives you the option to view pictures ‘uploaded to this post’. When I clicked on that it showed zero images because although I had images in my post, they had all been copied across from the original draft and I hadn’t uploaded any new images. (This would also happen if you just used images that were already in the media library).
This is where the reader takes your images from
This workaround has worked for me too. Hope this helps!
Kind regards,

Hi Jason,
Thanks so much!! I’m glad you got sucked in! I hope you keep coming back and visiting.
I’ve heard of this workaround before, thanks for posting it here. Did this user copy the entire post from another program or something? I didn’t know you can copy over images. This sounds like a very convoluted way to do something that should be very simple.
It’s worth doing in a pinch I guess, but WordPress really should have a drop down or something to select the Reader image. Or, again, just make the feature image the featured image.
Thanks for the workaround! But mostly for your kind comment about Mind Your Dirt!
cheers!

James, you are very welcome!
Ah! I see, the way she did it is a bit more complicated than it needs to be. Whenever I do it, I just make sure that when I set the featured image I select the “Media Library” tab and change the selection to the “uploaded to this post” option. Then I add the photo for the featured image there instead of just to the media library. Everything else I do normal and it works like a charm. Just need to add that extra step of doing the Media Library tab with the “uploaded to this post” option for the featured pic.
You are right, though, that shouldn’t make a difference. The featured image should be the one on the reader regardless!
Now I need to go buy me some chickens so I can start saving some $$$ as per your post!
Kind regards,

Oh that makes more sense! I’ll give it a shot and see how it works.
Haha, everyone should have chickens! The entertainment value alone is well worth the investment.
Your site is pretty stellar as well! I love the periodic table design and the cool animations. Very nice!
