  Presuming you’re referring to a WordPress.com website…
  You can’t add images to a Recent Posts widget on a WordPress.com website. You could create a widget that does so, by inserting the following display posts shortcode, or something similar, in a text widget:

  [display-posts image_size="thumbnail" posts_per_page="10" include_date="true"]

  The image displayed must be a featured image, so it doesn’t display an image if there is no featured image uploaded to a post, or if the theme your using hasn’t the option of a featured image.
