Change the number of columns in a gallery

  I’d like to change the galleries I’ve just set up from 3 columns to 4 columns wide.
  When I go into the gallery page then select the gallery to edit I can change the image order etc. but I don’t see where I can change the number of columns (as shown in the WP Support gallery section). Please could someone tell me (in simple terms!) how it’s done.

  The Square tiles and Circles Gallery types will automatically adjust to three columns wide, with any “leftover” image or images being enlarged to fill the entire width of your theme’s posting column. You cannot adjust the number of columns for these and the Mosaic type of Gallery.

  The only Gallery type that allows setting the number of columns is the default Thumbnail type, but it seems that setting has recently disappeared. You can follow this thread if you are interested. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/gallery-link-settings-malfunction?replies=9

  Aah – that explains it – thank you! I think I’ll change the number of images as it looks a little odd with one soooo much bigger than the rest.

  Thanks also for the link. I’ll keep on eye on how that progresses.

  Thanks, justjennifer, for the explanation for gallery columns.
  I’m also looking for a way to change the column count so I can post a 2-column, four-image gallery.
  Is my search futile for code, margin-changes or any other work-around?
  Might an option-change like this come in a near-future update?

  @marsowords The only Gallery type that allows setting the number of columns is the default Thumbnail type of Gallery. See here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/ especially Point 6.

  Thanks for topic tips that spare us from looking for ways to do things that are not an option. Experimenting, I did find a way to make a four-image post, but it doesn’t run as a gallery: http://wp.me/p3QC2f-RO

  WordPress.com is full of options.

  But is that four squared image really doing what you want it to do? One of the blank squares is clickable. It might work better to make a single composite image in an image editing program.
