Change theme, lose widgets?
-
Hello! When I preview a theme, not all the widgets on my page are visible. Is that because the theme doesn’t support that widget? I’d like to change themes, but I don’t want to lose my widgets. In particular, I’ve set up two calendars (Exotic Events, in my sidebar) that took forever to get right, and I’m afraid they won’t copy over if I switch from Chaotic Soul to Coraline. Can anyone advise an untech-y person? Thank you so much.

No. When we change a theme all the widgets we used previously migrate into the Inactive Widgets box. The theme displayed has a “sidebar display” but they aren’t actual widgets. As soon as we go here > Appearance > Widgets and place the widgets we want where we want them to display the “sidebar display” is over-ridden by our choices of actual widgets.

All widgets that are provided here are supported on all themes (with the exception of Monotone which doesn’t support widgets at all). This is due typically to viewing or changing to a theme that has more or less sidebars, or sidebars called different things, or sidebars not in the same position (one might call the sidebar primary, one call it sidebar, and one call it secondary, etc.).
If you switch themes, all of your widgets that do not get moved into a sidebar on the new theme will be in the “inactive” widgets area on the widgets page under appearance and you can simply add them back into the sidebar(s) on the new theme and arrange them as you desire.

One other thing I’ll mention, is that with any text widgets you have created, it is always a good idea to copy out all that code and put it into a plain text file for safe keeping just in case something happens. It is not likely that your custom widget code will vanish, but there is always that chance.
G’evening TT. You were fast!
